NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Merrimack
College men's lacrosse senior midfielder Corey
Lunney has been named Lacrosse Magazine’s
Preseason Player of the Year, as announced on Monday. Merrimack
also received a No. 5 preseason National ranking from the
magazine.
Lunney has led the Warriors to 37 wins and three straight
Northeast-10 Conference championship games during his three years
in North Andover and has been team captain for the last two
seasons. Lunney topped the NE-10 last year with 45 goals and ranked
third with 59 points while earning All-American accolades and first
team all-conference honors. The Little Silver, N.J. native also
earned his second straight New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse
Association Player of the Year award following the 2012
campaign.
For his career, Lunney ranks second all-time in goals with 130 and
tied for fifth in total points with 170. He also ranks 10th
all-time in groundballs with 91 but can enter the top five by the
end of the 2013 season.
The Warriors finished last season with an overall record of 13-3
including a perfect 6-0 record at Martone-Mejail Field. Merrimack
advanced to the NE-10 championship game for the fourth straight
season but they were denied the NE-10 title by Le Moyne for second
time in four tries.
The Northeast-10 Conference has four schools ranked in the top-10
in the preseason rankings, more than any other conference in the
country.
Merrimack will open the season with the No. 5 ranking, only two
spots behind NE-10 foe Le Moyne, which sits at No. 3. Conference
members Adelphi and Saint Michael's also rank inside the top-10 in
the preseason polls at No. 8 and No. 9 respectively.
