Top Seeds Hold Sway During NE-10 Men's Soccer Quarterfinal Round

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 4, 2014

#1 Southern New Hampshire, #8 American International 0

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The defending national champions were sternly tested by American International College, but a goal with just over ten minutes left in regulation by Orri Gustafson would send Southern New Hampshire University on to the Semifinal Round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship.

American Int'l's Sebastian Tamayo was sensational in net in defeat, allowing just the one goal, while making nine saves. The Penmen's Dom Dimaggio stopped one shot in recording the Quarterfinal shutout.

#2 Southern Connecticut 5, #7 Franklin Pierce 0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 15 nationally-ranked Southern Connecticut State University Owls defeated the Franklin Pierce University Ravens Tuesday afternoon by a final score of 5-0.

Markus Jacobsen, pictured, scored a hat trick for the Owls, and Chae Brangman and Ignacio Navarro each pitched in with a goal of their own.  So. Connecticut keeper Noah Varonier made four saves in the win.

#3 Adelphi 2, #6 Le Moyne 1

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Third-seeded Adelphi University continued their strong play as of late, and knocked off sixth-seeded Le Moyne College in the Quarterfinal Round of the Northeast-10 Championship. The Panthers scored two goals in the first 20 minutes of action en route to the win.

Shane McLaughlin got Adelphi on the scoreboard just six minutes into the contest with the game's first goal. Teammate Juan Aguiar, the regining conference player of the week, would score in the game's 19th minute to give Adelphi a two-goal advantage, which would come in handy as the Dolphins' Fabian Egger would score in the 82nd minute to make the final score, 2-1.

#5 Merrimack 2, #4 Stonehill 1

EASTON, Mass. - The quarterfinal matchup pitted fifth-seeded Merrimack College against fourth-seeded Stonehill College.

Late in the first half, the Skyhawks capitalized on a free-kick opportunity courtesy of a Warriors infraction. Defender Ben Zandonella whipped the ball into the box from nearly 50 yards away, allowing Merrimack's senior goalkeeper Jose Silva to make a play on the cross.

Silva appeared to initially catch the ball, but it was knocked out of his hands and rolled into the back of the net. The strike was deemed an own goal, and the Warriors entered the half down by one.

In the 58th minute, Merrimack's Michael Rincon made a run down the right side, and sent a cross towards the far post. Freshman Juan Meza connected on a volleyed attempt to tie the score at 1-1.

Three minutes later, Rincon made a similar play. He dashed down the right side, crossing the ball towards Skyhawks' keeper Luke Beese. The ball was punched away by Besse, but it went right to junior Augusto Silva who smacked the ball into the open net to give the Navy and Gold its first lead of the afternoon, a lead that would hold up and send them into the conference semifinals.
