Defending National Champions Picked to Win NE-10 Men’s Soccer Title

SOUTH EASTON, Mass.Southern New Hampshire University, the defending national and conference champions, received 12 of a possible 14 first-place votes and 168 points overall to take the top spot in the 2014 Northeast-10 Conference Men's Soccer Coaches' Preseason Poll, the conference office announced this morning.

The Penmen defeated Merrimack College, 1-0, last fall to claim the 2013 NE-10 title. So. New Hampshire would go on, ultimately, to win the national title in December.

Merrimack finished second in the coaches' poll with 146 points, while Adelphi University checked in third with 143, including two first place nods.  Southern Connecticut State University was fourth in the voting with 141 points, and Franklin Pierce was fifth with 129.

Le Moyne College (111 points), Bentley University (98), The College of Saint Rose (69), American International College (68), and Saint Michael's College (60) rounded out the top ten according to the NE-10 head coaches.

Rounding out the rest of the men's soccer poll was Stonehill College (48), The University of New Haven (37), Assumption College (32), and Saint Anselm College (24).

The 2014 men's soccer season begins Thursday, September 4, with NE-10 play beginning the following Saturday – September 13. The Northeast-10 Conference playoffs get underway on Tuesday, November 4 with the championship game to be played on Sunday, November 9.
