SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador - Merrimack rising senior Carly Muscaro won a gold medal for Team USA, racing in the 4x400-meter relay at the 2016 NACAC (North American, Caribbean & Central American) Under-23 Championships.
Muscaro, along with teammates Jaide Stepter (Southern California), Kiah Seymour (Kentucky) and Shakima Wimbley (Miami), finished with a time of 3:28.45, besting the Jamaican (3:32.06) and Canadian (3:44.45) national teams.
Muscaro, the two-time national champion, raced the first leg of the event.
The lone Division II student-athlete on the squad, Muscaro competed for her nation just two weeks after becoming a semifinalist in the 400-meter dash at the 2016 USA Track & Field Summer Olympic Trials in Oregon. The Division II 400-meter dash national champion and 200-meter dash runner-up qualified thanks to her record-shattering time of 51.17 seconds in the former event back at the New England Championships in early May.
The 4x400-meter relay occurred on the final day of the U23 Championships at the Jorge "El Magico" Gonzalez National Stadium in San Salvador, El Salvador.
