GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Adelphi University Director of Athletics and Recreation, Danny McCabe announced today that Pat McCabe (no relation) has been tabbed as new head coach of the women's lacrosse program. McCabe comes to Garden City with a tremendous background on the collegiate, professional and international stage and will lead the Panthers in defense of their 2014 NCAA Division II National Championship.

"We are excited to welcome Pat McCabe as the new Head Coach of Adelphi University women's lacrosse program. Pat is a person of high character, who has won at every level of lacrosse" explained McCabe. "His extensive experience and knowledge of the game of lacrosse separated him from the rest of the candidate pool, along with his strong values and tireless work ethic. He and his staff will assist our student-athletes in excelling both on and off the field of play."

A National Hall of Fame Defenseman, McCabe, started his illustrious playing career at Elmont Memorial High School, where he led the program to a New York State Championship.  In 1987 he would matriculate at Syracuse University, where he would win three NCAA Division I National Championships, earn four United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association All-American honors and the 1990 NCAA Defensive Player of The Year award.

"I am humbled by this opportunity and look forward to leading this special group of young women.  Adelphi University women's lacrosse has set a high standard, both on and off the field and I will work tirelessly to uphold that tradition," stated McCabe. "I'd like to thank Athletic Director Danny McCabe, the search committee and the Administration at Adelphi for their support."

Following college, McCabe moved into the professional ranks, playing for the New York Saints of the National Lacrosse League from 1992 thru 2001, spending seven years as team captain. In 2001 he joined the Long Island Lizards of Major League Lacrosse, spending six years with team, all of them as captain.  He also helped the Lizards to Major League Lacrosse Championships in 2001 and 2003.

McCabe also brings a wealth of international experience to Adelphi. He first donned a USA jersey in 1988 as part of the U19 team at the World Championships in Adelaide, Australia, where he earned "Fairest and Best Player" at the Championship honors. He followed that up with inclusion on the 1990 (alternate), 1998 and 2006 United State National teams, earning a Gold medal in 1998 and a Silver Medal at the 2006 World Championships.

Collegiately, McCabe has spent time as a defensive coordinator with the LIU-Post men's lacrosse program from 1999 thru 2001, helping the Pioneers to NCAA Division II runner-up finishes in 1999 and 2000. He was also a member of the Adelphi University men's lacrosse coaching staff in 2011, pushing the Panthers to NCAA Division II runner up status.

McCabe is also the found and camp director for Shooting Star Lacrosse Camps, which has operated since 1999 and founded ICON Lacrosse, where he coaches the girl's lacrosse class of 2017 team, while also acting as program director.
