MassLive feature on 'Bikes for Kids'
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - American International head men's basketball coach Andy Burkholder held a basketball clinic where more than 30 children from the Greater Springfield Area received free bicycles in recognition of their hard work in school as part of the "Bikes for Kids" initiative.
In a full day of fun and learning on the court, 33 third grade students from each elementary school in the city participated in basic ballhandling and dribbling drills lead by Burkholder at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Following the clinic, the children toured the Hall of Fame before enjoying lunch until being surprised by Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno with red Huffy bicycles and helmets donated by either a certain individual or church.
"We try to put an emphasis in our program to be truly mentally tough, and that formula consists of having a great attitude, giving your very best, treating people very well and being unconditionally grateful," commented Burkholder.
"The children that were honored this past weekend exhibit all of those qualities, which is why they were selected by their respective schools. AIC men's basketball was extremely proud to be a part of such an event."
Each recipient was chosen by his/her respective school guidance counselor as they each exhibited great character and a strong dedication to academics. The goal of the giveaway is to help promote active and healthy lifestyles for young children.
The event isn't held every year as not to ruin the surprise. Two years ago was the last time the city hosted the event and nearly 160 children received free Huffys that year.
