Thomas breaks own conference mark in women’s
400 IM, Cswerko sets new record in men’s 100 breast

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University is in control after two days of the 2013 Northeast-10 Conference Swimming & Diving Championships, holding leads in both the men’s and women’s team standings.

So. Connecticut senior Amanda Thomas (pictured below, left) won Friday night’s women’s 400 IM, breaking her own conference record in the process. Thomas finished the heat in 4:20.73, besting the previous mark of 4:20.76 and missing an NCAA A cut by 1.12 seconds.

Saint Rose senior Caitlin Brauer (pictured below, right) finished second in the heat with a time of 4:28.67, which was also good for a NCAA B cut.

The two seniors, despite sharing a rivalry in the pool for four years, shared a special moment following the race knowing that they both are competing in their final Northeast-10 Championship this weekend.

In the men’s 100 breaststroke, So. Connecticut sophomore Raymond Cswerko set a new Northeast-10 record with a time of 55.56, taking down former teammate Austin Mizzell’s record (56.34) set last year.

Saint Rose senior Naomi Woodcock took the women’s 100 breast with a NCAA B cut time of 1:04.17. Bentley senior Jessica Hodsdon (1:04.21) and So. Connecticut junior Elizabeth Hess (1:05.95) also posted B cut times.

So. Connecticut freshman Louis Geist had a B cut time in the men’s 400 IM, winning the final in 4:04.06. Fellow freshman and teammate Christopher Curtin also had a B cut time in the event (4:04.67).

Pace’s Kaitlyn Lynch took the women’s 100 fly with a NCAA B cut time of 57.37, while Bentley senior Jessica Hodsdon (57.40) and Le Moyne freshman Tara O’Donnell (57.60) also posted B times in the event. In the men’s 100 fly, Le Moyne freshman Danie Tarbrake won Friday’s final with a time of 51.79.  

Lynch later in the night finished first in the women’s 100 back, posting a time of 57.76, missing the B cut time by 1/100th of a second. Pace got another victory when Dogus Akay took the 100 men’s back with a time of 52.42.

Friday night’s women’s 200 free winner was Bentley sophomore Nadine Edwards, who posted a NCAA B cut time of 1:55.38, while So. Connecticut’s Meghan Fay finished second in the heat and also had a B cut time (1:55.56).

In the men’s 200 free, Saint Rose’s Kyle Wilson came close to the conference mark of 1:40.71 set two years ago, finishing with a NCAA B cut time of 1:40.87. Pace’s Michael Fridman also had a B cut mark (1:42.81).

The women’s 200 medley relay began Friday night’s finals at Hutchison Natatorium, as the So. Connecticut foursome of Thomas, Hess, Christine Katrenya and Nicole Caron took the top spot with a time of 1:48.18.

The So. Connecticut men followed up with win of their own in the 200 medley relay, as Curtin, Cswerko, Kyle Pietro and Jared Thurston had a time of 1:33.78, which was just 0.4 seconds short of the Northeast-10 record.

The 800 freestyle relays capped off Friday night’s action as the So. Connecticut women won with a time of 7:48.75. In the men’s event, Saint Rose finished first with a time of 7:00.05.

Earlier Friday afternoon, Adelphi freshman Jalen Jennings took first place in the men's 1-meter diving final with a score of 462.50 score, good for an NCAA A cut. Jennings narrowly defeated fellow freshman Josh Byrne of Le Moyne by a mere 1.35 points, as Byrne also posted an A cut score of 461.15.

Bentley’s Colton Bridge placed third (396.70) in the men’s 1-meter competition, while Saint Rose’s Ryan Butler finished fourth (362.75), teammate David Genender finished fifth (331.75) and Joe Vo of Saint Michael’s came in sixth (263.20).
