Conyers collect Field Athlete of the Year awards

Ada Udaya have been named the 2014
Northeast-10 Conference Outdoor Track Athletes of the Year, as
voted upon by the league’s head coaches, it was announced on
Thursday by the league office.

Sharpe, who earned the distinction of Most Outstanding Track
Performer at last week’s Northeast-10 Men’s Outdoor
Championship, owns the top conference times in both the 400 meters
(47.69) and 400 meter hurdles (52.15) this outdoor season. He has
provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in both events,
as his 400 time is 27th in the nation and his 400 hurdle time is
13th best in Division II.
Udaya was named Most Outstanding Track Performer of the
women’s championship this past weekend, as she currently owns
the fastest time in all of Division II in both the 100 meters
(11.48) and the 200 meters (23.22). Each mark is good for an NCAA
automatic qualifying time for the All-American from West Haven,
Conn.
So. Connecticut senior Nick Lebron was
voted the Northeast-10 Men’s Field Athlete of the Year, as he
currently owns the top decathlon performance in the conference
(7160), which is fifth best in the country and automatically
qualifies him for NCAAs. Lebron, who won the national title in the
heptathlon during the 2013-14 indoor season, is also third in the
conference in the 110 meter hurdles with an NCAA provisional time
of 14.37 seconds, and among the Northeast-10’s top-five in
the high jump, long jump and pole vault.
New Haven junior Briana Conyers was
named the Northeast-10 Women’s Field Athlete of the Year.
Named the Most Outstanding Women’s Field Performer at the
conference championships, Conyers owns the top heptathlon
performance in the Northeast-10 (4311) and is tops in the
women’s triple jump (12.64m) among conference leaders, and
10th in the nation, while hitting the NCAA provisional qualifying
standard in the event.
So. Connecticut freshman Yakabu Ibrahim
earned Northeast-10 Men’s Track Rookie of the Year honors
after helping the Owls to the Northeast-10 crown. Ibrahim is second
in the conference in the 110 meter hurdles with a provisional time
of 14.30 seconds, which is 17th best in Division II. He is also and
tied for fourth in the NE-10 in the 100 meters (21.99) and is 11th
in the 100 meters (11.04).
Merrimack College freshman Carly Muscaro
garnered Northeast-10 Women’s Track Rookie of the Year
laurels after a stellar outdoor campaign. Among Northeast-10 ranks,
she is first in the 400 meters (54.29), first in the 800 meters
(2:11.20), fifth in the 100 meters (12.23) and fifth in the 200
meters (24.86). Both her 400 and 800 meters meet the NCAA
provisional standard, as she is seventh nationally in the 400 and
18th nationally in the 800.
Merrimack freshman John Braga was named
the 2014 Northeast-10 Men’s Field Rookie of the Year, as he
ranks fifth in the conference in both the long jump (7.07m) and the
high jump (1.98m).
Assumption College freshman Gwendelyn
Sawyer collected the Northeast-10 Women’s Field
Rookie of the Year award, as she owns the top performance in the
shot put (12.71m), is fourth in the discus (35.78m) and 12th in the
hammer throw (33.20m) among conference leaders.
Both So. Connecticut head coaches collected Coach of the Year
honors, as the Owls’ John Wallin
was named the 2014 Northeast-10 Men’s Coach of the Year after
leading his program to the outdoor title, and Melissa
Stoll was named Northeast-10 Women’s Coach of
the Year by her peers after a second-place finish at the conference
championships.
The Northeast-10 Conference is an association of 15 NCAA
Division II colleges and universities located in New England and
New York that is committed to supporting balanced academic and
athletic opportunities for more than 6,000 student-athletes. Each
year, 4,000 of those student-athletes compete in conference
championships in 23 sports, making the NE-10 the largest DII
conference in the country in terms of sport sponsorship. Leading
the way in the classroom, on the field and within the community,
the Northeast-10 is proud of its comprehensive program and the
experience it provides student-athletes.
