New Haven, Merrimack to meet Saturday
for 2013 Northeast-10 Volleyball Championship

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The top-seeded University of New Haven earned a 3-1 victory over fourth-seeded Adelphi University Friday night on the campus of New Haven in the semifinals of the 2013 Northeast-10 Conference Volleyball Championship.

In the second semifinal contest, seventh-seeded Merrimack College continued its stellar championship play with a 3-1 win over sixth-seeded Stonehill College.

As a result, New Haven will host Merrimack Saturday evening at Charger Gymnasium (5:00 p.m.) to decide the 2013 Northeast-10 title. Video of the match will be available free of charge at northeast10.tv.

After the host Chargers took the first set, 25-19, Adelphi stormed back to take the second set in thrilling fashion, 27-25. Another thriller followed in the third set, although this time New Haven prevailed by a 27-25 score.

The Chargers then proceeded to close it out with a 25-18 victory in the fourth set.

As a result, New Haven will host the winner of tonight's other semifinal matchup between seventh-seeded Merrimack College and sixth-seeded Stonehill College, currently in progress. Watch live at northeast10.tv.

Margo Meteyer had a team-high 16 kills to go along with 12 digs for New Haven in the win, while Northeast-10 Player of the Year Amber Cannady added 14 kills and five total blocks for the Chargers. Northeast-10 Setter of the Year Kaulana Ane totaled 48 assists and 14 digs, while Kea-Marie Olaso had 17 digs.

For Adelphi, Kaitlyn DeStefano had a game-high 18 kills with five blocks, while Haley Blunt had 15 kills and 15 digs. Setter Katie Bryson produced a 50-assist, 11-dig performance and Sierra Crook had a game-high 25 digs.

Merrimack took the first two sets by final scores of 25-19 and 25-18, respectively, before Stonehill found its rhythm in the third, taking the set 25-17.

In the fourth set, Stonehill got out to a 10-5 lead, only for Merrimack to come back and tie it at 17-17 on a service ace by Jessica Cain. Stephanie Sheehan then followed up with a kill for an 18-17 Warriors' lead, which was followed by another ace from Cain and another kill from Sheehan to make 20-17. The Warriors rode that momentum to a 25-21 fourth-set victory and the match win.

Sheehan had a match-high 14 kills for Merrimack, while Madison Burke totaled 26 digs to lead all players. Cain came up with 10 kills and 15 digs, and Warriors setter Tara Stuhr, who earlier this week was named Northeast-10 Rookie of the Year, had 38 assists to pace the Merrimack offense.

Delia Phillips had 11 kills and 10 digs for Stonehill in the loss, and setter Emily Iverson had 30 assists.
