FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Peter Jay Recorded Two-Inning Save to Clinch Title.

MANSFIELD, Mass. – On This Date in 2013, the New Haven baseball team won the Northeast-10 Conference Championship for the first time since the athletics program became a full league member in 2009. The Chargers held-off Merrimack, 6-4, in the second game of a doubleheader to claim the title that day at Frank Vieira Field in West Haven, Conn.

Senior pitcher Peter Jay recorded a two-inning save against the Warriors on his way to earning the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award. Stephen Clout, Joe Romanelli and Brendon Buckley each had multi-hit games to lead the Chargers to the victory.

New Haven entered championship day with an undefeated 3-0 mark in the tournament, needing only one win over Merrimack to secure its title aspirations. Despite losing the first game, 6-0, the Chargers bounced back in the second game to edge the Warriors and hoist the NE10 trophy.

Since joining the NE10, the Chargers have posted a league record of 147-112-2 (.567), including eight seasons over .500. Head coach Chris Celano has led New Haven since 2012, becoming just the third coach to take the helm in more than 50 seasons of Chargers' baseball (Frank "Porky" Vieira coached 44 seasons).

New Haven has captured a pair of NE10 titles under Celano (2013 and 2017), while advancing to the NCAA Tournament on four occasions since his tenure began with the Chargers.
