Embrace the Victory: Le Moyne's Ryan Murphy Selected by Giants in Fifth Round of MLB Draft

Murphy

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Murphy was First Division II Player Selected in MLB Draft.

Syracuse, N.Y. – Le Moyne College junior pitcher Ryan Murphy (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) has been selected by the San Francisco Giants with the 144th overall pick in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, as announced by MLB Network and 1995 Syracuse Chiefs broadcaster Matt Vasgersian and the organization on Thursday night. The Giants took Murphy with the 13th pick of the fifth round.

Murphy, who has two seasons of eligibility remaining following the NCAA's decision to grant an additional season of eligibility to spring sport student-athletes who had their seasons cancelled by COVID-19, will now have until 5:00 p.m. Eastern time on Saturday, August 1 to sign with the Giants or return to the Dolphins for his fourth year. Should he sign with the Giants, he likely would be assigned to one of San Francisco's three short season/rookie-level teams: the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Keizer, Oregon) of the Northwest League or either the AZL Giants Black or AZL Giants Orange (Scottsdale, Arizona) of the Arizona League.

Murphy is the fourth-highest drafted Dolphin in the program's 73-year history, trailing only Jon Ratliff (24th overall by the Chicago Cubs in 1993), Josiah Gray (72nd overall by the Cincinnati Reds in 2018) and Jim Wessinger (123rd overall by the Atlanta Braves in 1976). Overall, he is the 36th Dolphin to be selected in the first-year player draft and the first to be selected by the Giants. As was the case with Gray two years, Murphy was the first Division II player selected in the draft, while Murphy ended up the one of three DII selections.

In four starts this season, Murphy went 2-1 with a 3.91 earned run average and 36 strikeouts (against only four walks) over 23 innings, while posting two complete games (the second-most in Division II). He ranked 14th nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio (9.0) and 25th in strikeouts per nine innings (14.09). In three of his four starts, he allowed two earned runs or less. He recorded at least seven strikeouts in all four of his starts, including a pair of games with at least 10. In Le Moyne's 3-1 win over St. Thomas Aquinas on February 21, he tied his career high with 12 strikeouts over seven innings in a complete-game four-hitter.

For his career, Murphy is 16-9 with a 3.40 earned run average and 215 strikeouts over 203.2 innings over 30 appearances, including 29 starts, while recording 11 complete games and three shutouts. His 1.94 walks per nine innings are the fourth-fewest in the program's history, his 9.5 strikeouts per nine innings are the fifth-highest, his 215 strikeouts are the sixth-most, his three shutouts are tied for the eighth-most and his 11 complete games are tied for 11th-most. As a freshman, he was named the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie Pitcher of the Year as well as to the all-conference second team and all-rookie team. On April 15, 2018, he became the first Dolphin freshman and eighth Dolphin overall to toss a no-hitter, accomplishing the feat in a 3-0 win at seventh-ranked University of New Haven. As a sophomore, he was named to the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division II Gold Glove Team, becoming the first Dolphin to be tabbed to the national team.
