Diverse Magazine Official Release

Fairfax, Va. - Since 1992, Diverse: Issues in Higher Education Magazine has recognized student-athletes -- of different ethnic backgrounds -- that have excelled on the field, in the classroom and in the community as Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars.

Last Monday, Adelphi men's soccer student-athlete Paolo Marciano received the distinct honor of being selected as a Top 20 finalist (10 men, 10 women) for consideration for the 2021 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar of the Year Award.

A native of Capaccio, Italy, Marciano's name was chosen among a pool of almost 1,000 nominated male and female scholar-athletes. He was named an Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar for the first time last April.

"I'm honored and humbled to be in consideration for the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar Award," said Marciano. "I am living a magnificent experience that is making me grow as a person and as a student-athlete. I want to share all of the success I have had in the past years with my coaches and teammates. Without their support and help, I could not have achieved all this."

"Paolo's recognition and success continues to be driven by his supreme dedication and commitment both on the field and in the classroom. He is the consummate student-athlete in both arenas. His athletic prowess and success is visibly clear for all to see. In contrast, his outstanding high-level of academic excellence all gained while studying in his second language is a quite remarkable achievement," Head Coach Gary Book explained.

Although he didn't have a playing season this fall as a result of safety precautions amidst the global health pandemic, Marciano's 2019 campaign will forever leave a lasting impression. In addition to carrying a 3.80 cumulative grade-point average, Marciano led the NE10 in goals (12) and points (32) in 2019, en route to being named the NE10 and ECAC Offensive Player of the Year.

He was also honored as a United Soccer Coaches First Team All-American -- the sixth all-time in program history -- as well as a D2CCA All-Region First Team and CoSIDA Academic All-District performer.

"Paolo is an outstanding representative of Adelphi University Athletics. As an international student, he has overcome language barriers and become accustomed to a new culture. Through all of this, he has excelled in the classroom and on the soccer field and has led the Panthers through one of the most successful eras in program history," Adelphi Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation Danny McCabe stated.

Marciano now awaits to find out if he will be selected as a semifinalist, which will be announced prior to the scheduled publishing date of April 29.
