Franklin Pierce, Le Moyne, and UMass Lowell Each Place Three on First Team

South Easton, Mass. – Franklin Pierce University first basemen Zach Mathieu was named the 2012 Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year following a vote by the conference's head coaches. The sophomore first basemen was also selected to the Northeast-10 Conference First Team.

The Northeast-10 also announced its All-Conference teams, as well as it's All-Rookie team and the selection of the major awards.

Franklin Pierce, Le Moyne College, and the University of Massachusetts Lowell each placed three student-athletes on the league's first team, while Bentley University and Southern New Hampshire University each had two players tabbed for the first team.

Mathieu put together an outstanding offensive season in helping to leads the Ravens to a 33-15-1 record overall, including 14-6-1 in Northeast Division play. The sophomore is currently either leading the league or is among the league leaders in virtually every offensive category.

He is currently hitting .384 with eleven homeruns and 43 runs batted in for Franklin Pierce. His batting average is third best, he's tied for second in homeruns, and he is fifth in runs driven in. The first basemen, who was named to the NE-10 All-Rookie Team last year, also leads the league in runs with 55, hits with 76, doubles with 19, and his .697 is far and away tops in the conference.

Southern New Hampshire's Timothy Flight was named the Conference's Pitcher of the Year. Flight is currently in the midst of an outstanding junior campaign, which has seen him be around or near the lead in strikeouts nationally throughout the season.

Flight is currently 7-1, with a 1.17 earned run average for the Penmen, who finished the regular season with a mark of 38-12. His seven wins are tied for second-nest in the league, while his 1.17 ERA is fourth.

The junior hurler leads the NE-10 in strikeouts with 116, which are presently 18 more then teammate Brad Monroe's total of 98. It's also second best in all of Division II, according to the most recent national statistical report.

Flight also has recorded three complete games this season, while his 84.2 innings of work is the third most in the Northeast-10.

Matt Walsh, also from Franklin Pierce, was named the 2012 Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Year by the conference's head coaches. The first year catcher produced both offensively and defensively, appearing in all 49 of the team's games this season.

Walsh is among the top twenty in the Northeast-10 in a number of offensive categories. His 63 hits are 12th-best, while his .344 batting average places him 14th, and his 36 runs batted in is currently good for 16th.

Pace University head coach Hank Manning was named the league's Coach of the Year following a vote by his peers. Manning led the Setters to a 29-19 overall mark, including a 17-4 record in Northeast-10 Southwest Division play, which earned Pace one of the top seeds in the Conference Championship.

Pace was picked to finish seventh in the Southwest Division prior to the start of the season, and their 29 wins were thirteen more then they recorded last year. They earned the top seed in the Northeast-10 Championship Southwest Division, but were defeated in the first round by the University of New Haven, 6-0.

The Northeast-10 is an association of 16 NCAA Division II colleges and universities located in New England and New York that is committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic opportunities for more than 5,500 student-athletes. Each year, 4,000 of those student-athletes compete in Conference championships in 23 sports, making the NE-10 the largest DII conference in the country.
