NCBWA All-Region Teams Feature 13 Northeast-10 Student-Athletes

Franklin Pierce's Mathieu and Southern New
Hampshire's Flight named East Region Player, Pitcher of the Year

South Easton, Mass. – Franklin Pierce University sophomore Zach Mathieu has been named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East Region Player of the Year, it was announced by the organization on Wednesday, while Southern New Hampshire University lefthander Tim Flight received Pitcher of the Year honors.

Mathieu is currently hitting .388 with 13 home runs and 48 RBI while Flight is 7-1 with a 1.17 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 84.2 innings. The two were also named the Northeast-10 Conference Player and Pitcher of the Year for the 2012 campaign.

Both individuals have also helped lead their respective teams to the NCAA Division II East Regional, which begins Thursday on the campus of So. New Hampshire. Mathieu's Ravens enter regional play as the No. 3 seed while Flight's Penmen are the top seed. Second-seeded Le Moyne College and fourth-seeded Saint Anselm College will also compete at regionals.

In all, 13 student-athletes representing Northeast-10 member institutions were named to the 2012 NCBWA All-East Region Team, including six on the First Team.

Joining Mathieu and Flight on the First Team were two other Franklin Pierce members in freshman catcher Matt Walsh and graduate student outfielder James Roche. Also garnering selection was University of Massachusetts Lowell junior second baseman James Katsiroubas and Stonehill College senior Michael White at the designated hitter/utility slot.

Four more position players were named to the Second Team, including UMass Lowell senior third baseman Cam Kneeland, Assumption junior shortstop Shane Keddy, Le Moyne senior outfielder Brett Botsford and Le Moyne junior outfielder Zach Wiley.

Three pitchers were also selected to the Second Team, with Saint Anselm senior John Healy, Le Moyne senior Ed Kohout, and So. New Hampshire junior reliever Alex Powers receiving All-Region nods.

The Northeast-10 is an association of 16 NCAA Division II colleges and universities located in New England and New York that is committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic opportunities for more than 5,500 student-athletes.
