Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi
University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics held its annual
Fall Cocktail Party at the Chateau Briand in Carle Place, N.Y.
Former New York Yankee and New York Met legend David
Cone signed autographs and entertained the crowd of
over 350 people during the eventful evening that raised money for
Adelphi University athletics.
The evening began with cocktails and a buffet catered by the
Chateau Briand and sponsored by the Adelphi University Panther
Club, and segued into an autograph session during which Cone signed
photos, baseballs and other memorabilia for hundreds of avid
fans.
Adelphi baseball Head Coach Dom Scala
emceed the event and offered the welcoming speech that set the tone
for the engaging event. Scala thanked those in the department who
made the event possible, then revealed that next year's Hank's
Yanks charity baseball game will be dedicated to Bat for the Cure,
the official charity of longtime New York baseball journalist
Ed Randall.
“Tonight was a special night,” Scala said. “When
you looked around the room, you saw so many happy faces from young
kids to the Baby Boomers. David Cone was a gentleman and a class
act.”
Randall, a world renowned baseball media personality and host of
the famous “Talking Baseball” radio show, interviewed
Cone on the Panther Stage following speeches from Adelphi
University President Dr. Robert Scott and
Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics
Robert E. Hartwell. Randall chatted with
Cone for over 45 minutes on various aspects of Cone's 17-year
career in Major League Baseball.
Cone reminisced about learning to throw a baseball with his dad as
a child in Kansas City, and debated over who would win between the
1986 Mets and the 1998 Yankees. Cone and Randall laughed about the
wacky personalities of the '86 Mets, admired the majesty of the
1992 Toronto Blue Jays, and solemnly recalled the Yankee's
heartbreaking loss to the Seattle Mariners in Game Five of the 1995
American League Division Series.
“The Panther Stage was a big hit again, and David's stories
really made you feel like you were there with him in the big
moments of his career,” Scala said. “I can't thank him
enough for coming out and supporting Adelphi athletics.”
The Yankee ace captured the hearts of all in attendance as he
narrated the events of his perfect game versus the Montreal Expos
on July 18, 1999. The intimate details and genuine pride that Cone
revealed while speaking of the historic game proved to be the
highlight of the special evening.
The night finished with a live auction and raffle drawing, the
proceeds of which were donated to Adelphi athletics. The big ticket
items for the auction included two baseballs and two framed
pictures autographed by the Yankees “Perfect Six,” the
three pitchers and three catchers involved in the three perfect
games in Yankee history. Cone's autographed Yankee jersey also drew
large bids in the auction, while over two dozen raffle items
featured balls and bats signed by various MLB players of past and
present.
