South Easton, Mass. – Merrimack College's Casey Cotter was named the 2013 Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year following a vote by the conference's head coaches it was announced today. Cotter had an outstanding season in helping lead Merrimack to a postseason berth.
The Northeast-10 also announced its All-Conference teams, as well as it's All-Rookie team and the selection of the remaining major awards this morning. Adelphi University placed six student-athletes on All-Conference teams, leading the way, while the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Merrimack College, and Southern New Hampshire University each had five.
Cotter has spearheaded the Merrimack offense with a league-leading .419 batting average. The leadoff hitter also leads the NE-10 in on-base percentage (.508). Cotter, an outfielder, is currently third in the league in hits (65), and is fourth in the league in slugging (.535).
He helped lead the Warriors to a 26-17 record, including a 12-9 mark in the Northeast Division, which earned them the four seed and they will travel to Rindge, N.H. to take on Franklin Pierce University tonight at 7 p.m. Cotter was also named a First Team All Conference selection by the head coaches.
Cotter's teammate, Frank Crinella was named the NE-10 Rookie of the Year by the head coaches. Crinella was a welcome addition to the lineup for the Warriors as he is currently hitting .338 (11th-best in the league). Crinella also knocked in 26 runs, has 48 hits on the season, and his .451 slugging percentage is second best on the team.
Crinella was named to the Conference's Third Team, and was also named to the 2013 Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team. He was one of just two first year players to earn All-Conference recognition.
Franklin Pierce's Trevor Graham was named the 2013 Northeast-10 Conference Pitcher of the Year. Graham is currently 8-1 with a 1.76 earned run average heading into the postseason. He helped lead the Ravens to the Northeast Division regular season title, as they finished 15-6 in Divisional play.
On the season, Graham is among the league leaders in a number of categories. He's 2nd in the NE-10 innings pitched (87.0), as well as 2nd in strikeouts (99). Graham's 8 wins are currently tied for second in the conference, while his 1.76 ERA is seventh best. Graham has also authored two complete games so far this season, which is tied for tenth-best. He was also named a First Team All Conference selection.
Bentley University's Bob DeFelice was named the 2013 Bob Bellizzi Northeast-10 Coach of the Year. DeFelice lead the Falcons to a 26-20 mark overall, however, they were 13-8 in NE-10 Divisional play, which earned them the No. 2 Seed. Bentley will play host to So. New Hampshire this afternoon in a first round game.
Prior to the season, DeFelice's squad was picked to finish 6th in the Division. Four of DeFelice's student-athletes were named All-Conference with catch Kevin Korwek named to the First Team.
The award is named after The College of Saint Rose's former head coach Bob Bellizzi who died following a long battle with cancer.
