Three Northeast-10 Baseball Student-Athletes Receive Capital One Academic All-America Honors

SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – Franklin Pierce University's Ryan Thompson, Merrimack College's Joe Mantoni and Southern New Hampshire University's Derrick Sylvester have earned 2013 Capital One Academic All-America Baseball honors, it was announced on Thursday. 

All three are seniors and were selected to the Third Team, as voted upon by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Thompson, a righthander, was also a Capital One Academic All-America Third Team selection in 2012 and wraps up his Ravens career with 20 career victories on the mound. A Mass Communications major with a 3.80 GPA, the Calgary native went 4-1 with a 2.23 ERA in 48.1 innings this year before missing time due to injury. Thompson was also a 36th round pick of the New York Yankees in the 2011 MLB Draft, the same year in which he earned Northeast-10 Pitcher of the Year honors. 

Mantoni, a pitcher and designated hitter with the Warriors, has a 3.90 GPA as an Economics major at Merrimack. The senior was a 2013 Northeast-10 Second Team All-Conference selection after hitting .252 with a .392 on-base percentage, 36 RBI and 25 runs scored. On the mound, he struck out 32 in 28.0 innings and posted a 1.61 ERA. 

Sylvester, a Psychology major with a 3.89 GPA at So. New Hampshire, went 6-2 in 11 starts with a 1.34 ERA for the Penmen, who hosted the NCAA East Regional this past season. The former Boston College product also struck out 71 in 73.2 innings after redshirting in 2012 due to injury. 

The 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America teams programs since 2011. 

The Northeast-10 is an association of 16 NCAA Division II colleges and universities located in New England and New York that are committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic opportunities for more than 6,000 student-athletes. Each year, 4,000 of those student-athletes compete in Conference championships in 23 sports, making the NE-10 the largest DII conference in the country.
