Assumption and New Haven Selected to NCAA Division II Football Championship

Football Selections 2022

FOOTBALL BRACKET

NCAA First Round on Saturday.

MANSFIELD, Mass. – The Northeast-10 Conference had a pair of programs earn a spot in the Division II Football Championship on Sunday night during the NCAA Selection Show, as Assumption and New Haven were both announced as upcoming participants in Super Region 1.

Assumption (8-2, 6-1 NE10), the NE10 champion, earned the No. 3 seed and will host Slippery Rock on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Brian Kelly '83 Stadium, while New Haven (8-2, 6-1 NE10) will travel to play No. 2-seeded Shepherd on Saturday at 1 p.m. The two winners from those games will play the following Saturday (Nov. 26) in a second round matchup.

It is the first NCAA appearance for Assumption since 2017, while New Haven prepares to make its third appearance in the past four seasons.

For the second-straight year and third time in four seasons, the NE10 has produced multiple selections in the NCAA Football Championship. In 2021, both New Haven and Bentley represented the Conference. In 2018, it was LIU Post and New Haven.

Assumption clinched its third NE10 title this season with a 6-1 conference record, edging New Haven in a head-to-head tiebreaker after a 14-13 victory against the Chargers on October 29. The Greyhounds did it all with the ground game and defense, as they led all NE10 teams this season in rushing touchdowns (17), yards per rush (4.6) and interceptions (15). Assumption allowed only 15.0 points per game - second-best in the NE10 and eighth in NCAA Division II.

New Haven was nationally-ranked for the majority of the season prior to the loss to Assumption. The Chargers, the 2021 NE10 champions, averaged 36.6 points per game this season - the most among all NE10 programs and 17th in all of Division II.
