Five Northeast-10 Teams Selected to Participate in 2011 NCAA Division II Soccer Championships

South Easton, Mass. – The NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championship fields were announced last night with five Northeast-10 Conference institutions receiving the opportunity to play for the national title.

Franklin Pierce University and Southern New Hampshire University were both selected among the men’s 32-team field, while The College of Saint Rose, Merrimack College, and the University of Massachusetts Lowell were chosen as part of the women’s 48-team bracket.

On the men’s side, both Franklin Pierce (19-0-1) and So. New Hampshire (17-3-0) will receive first-round byes in the East Region, while Franklin Pierce serves as the top seed in Super Region 1 with home field advantage throughout the regional.

New York Tech (14-3-2) and Saint Thomas Aquinas (10-3-4) will play in first-round action on Thursday, with the winner set to take on Franklin Pierce in Rindge, N.H. on Saturday, November 12. Meanwhile, C.W. Post (16-2-1) and Nyack (13-5-2) will square off in a first-round matchup on Friday, with the winner drawing So. New Hampshire in Manchester, N.H. on Sunday, Nov. 13.

For the Ravens, who are currently ranked second in the nation, the trip marks the program’s ninth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Meanwhile the Penmen, who won the 1989 national championship and are ranked No. 12 nationally, will make their fourth straight trip. It is the 17th time being named to the tournament field for both schools.

In the women’s bracket, Saint Rose (19-1-1) was selected as the second seed in the East Region. The Golden Knights, who are ranked No. 15 nationally, will receive a first-round bye and will also host first-and second-round contests. It is the ninth time in 10 years that Saint Rose has been selected to tournament field.

Merrimack (16-3-1) draws Holy Family (13-7-0) on Friday, Nov. 11 in the first round as the region’s third seed, with the winner traveling to Albany, N.Y. to take on Saint Rose. It marks the 11th time the Warriors have reached the NCAA Tournament.

UMass Lowell (11-5-2) received the fourth seed in the region and will take on Dowling (13-5-2) on Friday, Nov. 11 in a first-round contest. The winner will take on Bridgeport, the top-ranked team in the East. The River Hawks will be making their fifth all-time NCAA appearance.
