South Easton, Mass. – The most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) men's and women's polls featured four Northeast-10 Conference teams among the top-25 teams in the country, it was announced yesterday.
The most notable move in this week's rankings was the Southern New Hampshire University men's soccer team, which jumped 12 spots, from 16th to fourth in the rankings. The Penmen (3-0-0, 1-0 NE-10) have posted three straight shutouts to begin the year, and took down then-fourth-ranked Dowling 1-0 on September 10. So. New Hampshire is the only remaining NE-10 team yet to allow a goal this season.
The Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team also appeared on the list, dropping two spots to No. 9. The Ravens (4-0-0, 1-0 NE-10) recently defeated the University of Massachusetts Lowell 3-2 in double overtime and have outscored opponents 10-3 through four games after being named preseason favorites by the NE-10 coaches.
Both So. New Hampshire and Franklin Pierce will square off in a crucial conference matchup this Saturday, Sept. 17 at Larkin Field in Manchester, N.H.
Meanwhile, the College of Saint Rose women's soccer team dropped from the top spot in this week's rankings to No. 9 as a result of a 1-1 tie at home against UMass Lowell on Sept. 9. The Golden Knights (4-0-1, 2-0-1 NE-10) are third in the nation in goals scored (21) in 2011. Saint Rose advanced to the national semifinals for the third straight season a year ago.
The Merrimack College women's soccer team also cracked the list, coming in at No. 18 in the rankings. The Warriors (4-0-0, 2-0 NE-10) took contests over Molloy and Dowling in the Dowling Tournament, before defeating Adelphi and New Haven to open up conference play.
The Northeast-10 is an association of 16 NCAA Division II colleges and universities located in New England and New York that are committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic opportunities for more than 6,500 student-athletes. Each year, 4,500 of those student-athletes compete in Conference championships in 23 sports, making the NE-10 the largest DII conference in the country.
