Adelphi, Franklin Pierce Advance in NE10 Men's Tennis Championship

MANSFIELD, Mass. - Adelphi and Franklin Pierce both won first round matchups in the Northeast-10 Conference Men's Tennis Championship on Tuesday, advancing to Thursday's semifinal round against the top two seeds in Le Moyne and Southern New Hampshire. No. 3 Adelphi blanked No. 6 Bentley, 4-0, while No. 5 Franklin Pierce upset No. 4 Saint Michael's on the road, 4-1. 

Adelphi will travel to play No. 2 Southern New Hampshire, while Franklin Pierce will play top-seeded Le Moyne in a rematch of the 2021 NE10 Men's Tennis Championship final. Both semifinal matches will be played on Thursday, with the two winners advancing to Saturday's Championship match - which will be hosted by the highest remaining seed.

OCEANSIDE, N.Y. - The No. 3 seed Adelphi men's tennis team comfortably coasted to a 4-0 win over sixth-seeded Bentley University in the first round of the 2022 NE10 Championship Tuesday at Point Set Racquet Club.

The Panthers (8-7) are set to advance to the semifinal round for the second time in as many years, and will meet No. 2 seed Southern New Hampshire University on Thursday (Apr. 28) in Manchester, N.H. Earlier this year, Adelphi played its most tightly-contested match of the season at SNHU -- a contest that saw the Penmen win by the slimmest of margins at 4-3.

Although the top pair of Marko Jovanovic and Gabriel Balestero trailed 6-5 in their match, the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams picked up the slack. Pietro Sole and Salomon Arce Lema won 6-4 in second doubles, while first-time doubles partners Valentin Le Goupil-Maier and Thiago Negrao were 7-5 victors at the No. 3 flight. The top of Adelphi's singles lineup handled the rest. Jovanovic (6-1, 6-3), Balestero (6-1, 6-2) and Adi Saginayev (6-4, 6-1) all won in straight sets to end it.


(5) Franklin Pierce 4, (4) Saint Michael's 1 – Box Score

COLCHESTER, Vt. – It was the opening day of the NE10 men's tennis tournament on Tuesday afternoon, where the fifth-ranked Franklin Pierce men's tennis team advanced to the semifinal round for the second straight season, upending #4 Saint Michael's on the road by a final score of 4-1. 

Franklin Pierce moves to 7-8 (4-4 NE10) and advances to play top-seeded Le Moyne, who received a bye into the the semifinal round. Saint Michael's concludes their season with a 7-10 (2-5 NE10) overall record.

The match opened with some doubles action, which saw Franklin Pierce's Ivan Bernal and Kevin Denecheau decisively defeat Purple Knight opponents Sergio Barroso and Jason Boucher, 6-1 on court two. In quick succession, graduate Felipe Carvalho and junior Alejandro Ortiz toppled Saint Mike's pairing of Jackson Moser and Michael Rosen in first singles to earn the doubles clinch, also winning 6-1. The pair of wins marks the eighth consecutive doubles victory for Franklin Pierce.

Franklin Pierce closed out the contest with a trio of wins in singles, leaving two matches unfinished with the final score. The Ravens opened the solo play with a 6-4, 6-2 win from Carvalho in first singles, which was swiftly followed with the only win on the afternoon for the Purple Knights from junior Josh Weiss at second singles. At third singles, Kevin Denecheau returned to battle through three close sets, defeating Sergio Barroso 6-3 in both the first and third sets.
