Four NE-10 student-athletes, four coaches receive East Region honors

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) honored four student-athletes and four coaches from Northeast-10 institutions with regional awards this week. A member of the NE-10 collected an award in each of the eight categories.

The Northeast-10 men’s and women’s Track Athletes of the Year, American International’s Mike Biwott and New Haven’s Ada Udaya, were both named East Region Track Athletes of the Year. Biwott’s qualifying time of 14:03 in the 5000-meter run is second best in the country. Udaya has the fastest times in Division II in both the 60- and 200-meter dashes.

Southern Connecticut’s Michael Lee and Michelle Grecni, the NE-10 Field Athletes of the Year, were also tabbed East Region Field Athletes of the Year. Lee’s 15.37m mark in the triple jump is third best in Division II. Grecni is the only pole vaulter in Division II with a mark over 4.00 meters (4.10).

American International head coach Leo Mayo was named Men’s Head Coach of the Year in the east region, while Stonehill’s Karen Boen earned East Region Women’s Head Coach of the Year. Southern Connecticut’s Bill Sutherland (men’s) and Joe Van Gilder (women’s) collected the region’s Assistant Coach of the Year accolades. 

At the Northeast-10 Championships, American International won on the men’s side and Stonehill took first on the women’s side. Southern Connecticut finished in second in both the men’s and women’s competitions at the conference championships.

This weekend, 42 student-athletes from seven different NE-10 teams will be competing in the 2015 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, which begins on Friday.
