Manchester, N.H. – Saint Anselm College Director of Athletics, Dr. Kelly Higgins, announced Monday that Dan Young has been hired as the new volleyball head coach, effective Aug. 1.

"After a thorough review, I was excited to be able to offer the position to Coach Young as the next women's volleyball coach for the Hawks," Higgins said. "He stood tall amongst a talented pool of candidates reviewed by the search committee. He works in the area, knows Saint Anselm, has the best interests of the student-athlete as a priority, is an educator, which is one of the critical skills for good coaches to help develop the talent of each student-athlete, knows the game as a student-athlete and has had success as a club coach, which helps him recruit those talented student-athletes to Saint Anselm. We are looking forward to him helping us take Hawk volleyball into the future."

Young, a native of Salem, N.H., comes to the Hilltop after spending the last seven seasons as the girls' volleyball head coach at Salem (N.H.) High School. After taking over a program that had not recorded a playoff victory in four years, Young guided the squad to the state quarterfinals or better in all seven years as head coach, including back-to-back state titles in 2006 and 2007.

Young, who earned Eagle Tribune Coach of the Year honors in both 2006 and 2011, posted a career record of 123-20 with the Blue Devils. Young churned out 15 All-State athletes, 16 Senior All-Starts, 14 Eagle Tribune All-Stars, 31 Eagle Tribune Honorable Mentions, an Eagle Tribune Player of the Year, a pair of NHVCA Players of the Year, a Gatorade Player of the Year and over 20 athletes that went on to play in multiple levels of NCAA volleyball.

"I would like to thank Fr. Jonathan DeFelice, Dr. Kelly Higgins and Donna Guimont for the opportunity to be the next head volleyball coach at Saint Anselm College," Young said. "I also wish to thank the student-athletes, faculty and staff who I met during my visit and who were so helpful in helping me understand the vision of the athletic department and the volleyball program. I am eager to get to work with the 2012 team as we strive to continue the volleyball program's growth."

In addition to his time at Salem, Young, who has been a 10th grade history teacher at Lawrence (Mass.) High School since 2002, has also served as the Director of Latitude 42 Volleyball Club since 2005. Young handles all financial issues pertaining to players' tuition, including organizing fundraisers to help all players be able to participate. Young also oversees and evaluates the 30 coaches and 200 high school-aged and younger players in the club, while also scheduling tournaments and booking travel plans.

Young received his B.A. in Political Science with a minor in Secondary Education from Merrimack College. He currently resides in Methuen, Mass.
