Chargers earn 3-1 victory over defending conference
champion Adelphi, await Sunday’s NCAA selection show

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Top-seeded University of New Haven earned a 3-1 victory over second-seeded Adelphi University on Saturday night at Charger Gymnasium to win the 2012 Northeast-10 Conference Volleyball Championship on its home court.

The conference title marks the Chargers’ second in three years and third over the last five. New Haven, which joined the Northeast-10 in 2008, has also gone a perfect 74-0 since then in regular-season conference play.

New Haven and Adelphi now await Sunday night’s NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship Selection Show, which will take place at 10:00 p.m. on NCAA.com. New Haven earns an automatic bid to the tournament by virtue of winning the conference championship and is expected to host the East Regional, while Adelphi is expected to earn an at-large bid.

Northeast-10 Player of the Year Keidy Candelaria was named the championship’s Most Outstanding Player after totaling 11 kills and 13 digs in Saturday evening’s title game. The senior was coming off a 25-kill, 12-dig performance in the quarterfinals against Southern Connecticut State University on Friday night.

For the Chargers, libero Kea-Marie Olaso had a game-high 30 digs, while Northeast-10 Rookie of the Year Kristen Lee turned in an 11-kill, 10-dig output in the victory. Amber Cannady added 11 kills and six total blocks, while Northeast-10 Setter of the Year Kaulana Ane amassed 39 assists and 14 digs.

Adelphi’s Chelsea Overholt had a game-high 14 kills and team-high 22 digs to lead the way for the Panthers, who were coming off their first-ever conference title last November. Setter Katie Bryson had 43 assists and 12 digs, while Bianca Hernandez had 18 digs.

New Haven took the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-19, before Adelphi took the third, 25-18. The Panthers won four straight points to keep hope alive and make it 24-18 in the fourth set, but a Cannady kill ended the run to clinch the league crown.
