Merrimack also appears at No. 17 in country in NSCAA poll
SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – The Southern New Hampshire University men's soccer team will open the season as the No. 7 team in the country, as voted upon in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire National Preseason Top-25 poll.
The Penmen return 19 players from last year's team, which advanced to the NCAA national quarterfinals, claimed the Northeast-10 Conference Championship and posted a 19-4-0 record.
Merrimack College was featured at the No. 17 spot in the poll following a 15-4-2 campaign last season, which included the conference regular-season title. The Warriors fell to So. New Hampshire in the Northeast-10 Championship game, but earned an NCAA First Round win over conference foe Franklin Pierce University before falling again to the Penmen in the second round.
So. New Hampshire plays its inaugural 2013 contest on Thursday, September 5, while Merrimack's schedule opens up the same day against Dominican (N.Y.). The two programs will go head-to-head on Wednesday, October 9 at Larkin Field in Manchester, N.H.
Fellow East Region school LIU Post of the East Coast Conference (ECC) appeared at No. 8 in the poll.
The Northeast-10 Conference is an association of 15 NCAA Division II colleges and universities located in New England and New York that is committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic opportunities for more than 6,000 student-athletes. Each year, 4,000 of those student-athletes compete in conference championships in 23 sports, making the NE-10 the largest DII conference in the country in terms of sport sponsorship.
