New Haven the Favorite in Football Preseason Coaches’ Poll

South Easton, Mass. – The University of New Haven received six of the nine possible first-place votes to take the top spot in the 2011 Northeast-10 Conference Football Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Chargers narrowly held off Southern Connecticut State University, tallying just one more point than the Owls, 59-58, in the overall voting. So. Connecticut received two first-place nods. 

New Haven (8-2, 6-2 NE-10) and So. Connecticut (6-4, 6-2 NE-10) were two of four teams to tie for the best record in the NE-10 a year ago. The two teams will square off on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7:00 p.m at Jess Dow Field in New Haven, Conn.

Merrimack College (4-6, 4-4 NE-10) received the other first-place vote, and had 47 points to finish third in this year's voting after a fourth-place conference finish in 2010.

Meanwhile, Bentley University (6-4, 6-2 NE-10) finished in the fourth spot with 43 points, a mere one point ahead of fifth-place American International College (6-4, 6-2 NE-10). Bentley and American Int'l were the other two teams to tie for the best NE-10 record last season.

Assumption College (6-5, 3-5 NE-10) sits in the sixth position with 28 points, while Stonehill College (5-5, 3-5 NE-10) garnered 23 points in the poll for the seventh spot. Saint Anselm College (2-8, 2-6 NE-10) and Pace University (0-9, 0-7 NE-10) rounded out the voting with 16 and 8 points, respectively.

Non-conference play begins on Thursday, September 1 before NE-10 action kicks off on Friday, Sept. 16 with Stonehill hosting Bentley. Three more conference matchups are set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 17.
