Two teams set to square off Sunday
afternoon at Merrimack to decide conference title

First-seeded Merrimack College and second-seeded Southern New Hampshire University both earned semifinal victories on Friday night in the 2012 Northeast-10 Conference Men’s Soccer Championship. With the wins, both teams advanced to Sunday afternoon's conference title game at Merrimack’s Martone-Mejail Field (1:00 p.m.).

The Northeast-10 will be broadcasting the men's soccer championship contest live at northeast10.tv on Sunday. Also be sure to follow the Northeast-10 on Twitter (@TheNortheast10) for in-game updates.

Merrimack will be making its first appearance in the championship game since 2007, while So. New Hampshire returns to the title contest for the second straight season and third time in five years.

Merrimack freshman Douglas Searl (pictured) scored in the 17th minute on Friday night to lead the Warriors to a 1-0 win over fifth-seeded Franklin Pierce University. Warriors goalkeeper Jose Silva turned aside all three shots he faced in the shutout.

Merrimack had been coming off a 3-1 quarterfinal victory over eighth-seeded American International College, while Franklin Pierce, which advanced the national semifinals a year ago, had defeated No. 4 Bentley University on the road in the first round.

So. New Hampshire sophomore Mohamed Toufik tallied the game-winner for the Penmen in the 69th minute on Friday, taking a feed from senior Ruben Resendes for the deciding goal in a 2-0 victory over third-seeded University of Massachusetts Lowell.

Senior Chris Tsonis later added an insurance goal on a restart with 6:23 to go, with Resendes assisting again, while goalkeeper Dom Dimaggio made four saves in the shutout.

The Penmen, who fell to Franklin Pierce in last year’s Northeast-10 Championship, trumped seventh-seeded Southern Connecticut State University, 7-0, on Wednesday in the quarterfinals. UMass Lowell previously took down sixth-seeded Le Moyne in a 3-1 win to advance to the semis.

The Northeast-10 Conference is an association of 16 NCAA Division II colleges and universities located in New England and New York that is committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic opportunities for more than 6,000 student-athletes.
