So. New Hampshire edges Merrimack, UMass Lowell
knocks off top-seeded LIU Post in NCAA Second Round
MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior Chris Tsonis converted a penalty kick with 13:42 remaining in regulation as second-seeded Southern New Hampshire University edged No. 3 seed Merrimack College 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship East Regional Sunday afternoon at Larkin Field.
The Penmen, who are ranked No. 10 nationally, improve to 18-3, while the No. 16-ranked Warriors see their season come to a close at 15-4-2 overall.
Meanwhile, in Lowell, Mass., fourth-seeded University of Massachusetts Lowell sophomore Juan Moreira (pictured) headed home a corner kick in the 88th minute as the fourth-seeded River Hawks defeated top-seeded Long Island University Post, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Tournament East Region Semifinal at Cushing Field.
With the victory, UMass Lowell improved to 15-5-1, while LIU Post, also ranked No. 1 in the country, ends its season with an 18-2 record.
So. New Hampshire and UMass Lowell will now meet for the NCAA East Region Championship match on Friday, with a site and time still to be determined.
Head to head this season, the Penmen topped the River Hawks twice, a 3-0 win on October 17 and a 2-0 win in the Northeast-10 Championship semifinals on November 2.
