Fans have a unique way to take in the action when the NE10 men's soccer semifinals kickoff Thursday.
No. 1 Franklin Pierce plays host to No. 5 Saint Anselm at 4pm with the action available on two separate live streams: the traditional NE10 NOW broadcast and a Spanish-language NE10 NOW broadcast, produced by the students at Ravens Sports Network and the Melvin Fitzwater Center for Communication at Franklin Pierce University.
Play-by-play commentary will be provided by Franklin Pierce sophomore Eric Valdovinos, a Ravens forward from Canton, Mass.
The broadcast is the second Spanish-language stream on NE10 NOW, following the men's soccer quarterfinals between American International and Franklin Pierce. That match was commentated bilingually by Valdovinos and FPU student Rich Rosa.
Franklin Pierce's team features 12 student-athletes from Spanish-speaking countries, including NE10 Player of the Year Younes Addar Khanoussi (Castellon, Spain), Co-Defensive Player of the Year Rodrigo Parafita Bestilliero (A Coruna, Spain) and Goalkeeper of the Year Diego Montoya Casillas (Cuernavaca, Mexico).
Spanish-language sports broadcasts have become increasingly more prevalent, with Spanish being the most spoken non-English language in the US, according to the most recent census. This fall, Grand Valley State added a dedicated Spanish-language broadcast for home football games, claiming it as the first Spanish-speaking broadcast known in NCAA DII football.
