NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Maureen
Spellman has
been named as head women's lacrosse coach at Southern Connecticut
State University, as it was announced Thursday by Owls' Director of
Athletics Patricia D. Nicol.
Spellman assumes the duties from Kelley
Frassinelli,
who spent the last 12 seasons as head coach from the inception of
the women's lacrosse program. Frassinelli will continue to serve in
her role as head field hockey coach and will enter her 19th season
in that capacity this fall.
“Maureen clearly made a significant impact as a part of our
staff over the course of the past academic year,” Nicol said.
“We are excited to have her leading our program as we head
into an important phase in its history.
“I also want to thank Coach Frassinelli for her dedication in
laying the foundation for our women's lacrosse program over the
course of the past 12 years and look forward to her enjoying
continued success at the helm of our field hockey
program.”
Spellman spent the 2013 season as an assistant coach with the Owls
and helped guide the team during a campaign in which they matched
the program's single-season win record.
Prior to joining the Owls, Spellman had a decorated four-year
career as a goalie for the University of New Haven. The Chargers'
all-time saves leader, she was a two-time All-Region and
All-Northeast-10 Conference pick during her time at New Haven.
Additionally, Spellman earned WomensLacrosse.com Division II
All-Rookie Team honors along with Northeast-10 Goalkeeper of the Year laurels in
her rookie season.
She ranked among the NCAA leaders in goals against average as a
freshman and senior and in save percentage as a junior and
senior. Spellman also ranked among the NCAA leaders in saves
as a junior.
Also a coach at the Skyhawks Sports Academy and active with the
Connecticut Special Olympics, she holds a bachelor's degree from
the University of New Haven.
