Assumption Headlines Lone Upset in NE10 Men's Lacrosse First Round Action

Ninth seed Assumption Earns Road Victory While Franklin Pierce & SNHU Also Win


MANSFIELD, Mass. – No. 9 seed Assumption secured the lone upset in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Men's Lacrosse Championship on Wednesday afternoon, while No. 6 Southern New Hampshire and No. 7 Franklin Pierce won on their home turf.

The victory sets up a strong set of quarterfinal matchups on Saturday, May 1. The Greyhounds will travel to face top seed Saint Anselm at 1 pm., while the sixth seeded Penmen will travel to Adelphi at 1 p.m. The Ravens, meanwhile, will play at undefeated Le Moyne also at 1 p.m.. No. 4 Bentley hosts No. 5 Pace in the fourth quarterfinal matchup at 7 p.m. 


No. 9 Assumption 10, No. 8 Saint Michael's 7 – Box Score

The Purple Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead three minutes into the contest and dominated much of the first ten minutes of action. Ryan Healey put Assumption on the board at 5:06 and the Greyhounds added one more goal for a 2-1 lead after the first quarter. They stretched their lead to 4-2 at the half and were up 7-5 through three quarters. 

Nicholas Shanley led the offense with three goals, one assist and three ground balls while Ryan Healey and Nolan Sheehan each had two goals and one assist. Colin Malone was dominant in net with a career-high 20 saves while allowed just seven goals to keep the Purple Knights at bay. Max Katavolos led St. Michael's with six goals on 16 shots.

This marked the first NE10 Tournament victory in program history for the Greyhounds. They now travel to face No. 1 Saint Anselm on Saturday at 1 p.m.


 No. 6 Southern N.H. 19, No. 11 AIC 9 - Box Score

SNHU graduate student David Wiedenfeld scored seven goals and assisted on two others as sixth-seeded SNHU toppled American International College 19-9 in first round action. Jack Terrones opened the scoring less than five minutes into the contest as SNHU scored the game's first five goals and led 6-1 after one period. Terrones and Wiedenfeld each scored twice in the first quarter.

Terrones finished the contest with five goals, two assists and ten ground balls while Gennaro Marra won 19 of 21 faceoffs with 13 ground balls. Ronan DePaul made six saves in net to earn the win. Avery Foye led AIC with three goals while Eddie Beattie picked up nine ground balls. 

The win was the first for the Penmen in the NE10 Tournament since 2016. They travel to face No. 3 Adelphi in the quarterfinals on May 1 at 1 p.m.


 No. 7 Franklin Pierce 13, No. 10 Saint Rose 8 - Box Score 

The Ravens used a strong defense and potent offense to earn the impressive 13-8 victory over Saint Rose on Wednesday. They jumped out to 3-1 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 6-2 in the second quarter. A 4-0 run by the Golden Knights knotted the score up 6-6 with 12:11 left in the third, however, Franklin Pierce scored the final five goals of the third for an 11-6 advantage. Each team scored twice in the final quarter for the five-goal margin. 

Connor Rooney led the offense with five goals, while Mike Alibrandi dished off five assists. Freshman James Heitmiller was dominant in net with 18 saves and allowed just eight goals to secure the victory. John Loughlin paced Saint Rose with three goals while Jack Pemrick chipped in two.

The Ravens will face off against undefeated Le Moyne at 1 pm on May 1 in the first matchup between the two teams this year.
