Owls men, women chosen
by head
coaches to sweep annual championships
SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – The Southern
Connecticut State University men and women have been selected as
the favorites for the upcoming 2014 Northeast-10 Conference
Swimming & Diving Championships, which will take place February
6-9 at the Hutchinson Natatorium on the campus of So.
Connecticut.
The championship poll was voted upon by the conference’s
head coaches. For the complete results, please see below.
Among the nine Northeast-10 women’s teams, So. Connecticut
received five first-place votes and 61 points, as the Owl women
will be seeking their 11th straight conference title.
The Owl men will be looking for their 11th Northeast-10 crown in a
12-year span after receiving six first-place votes and 36 points in
the men’s poll.
In the women’s coaches’ poll, Assumption College
received four first-place votes and 58 points to finish narrowly
behind So. Connecticut, followed by Bentley University with 51
points and The College of Saint Rose with 41 points.
Pace University (36 points), Le Moyne College (31), Saint
Michael’s College (21), Adelphi University (17) and Merrimack
College (8) rounded out the women’s voting.
Le Moyne finished second to So. Connecticut on the men’s
side, receiving 28 points, while Bentley was third with 27 points.
Saint Rose was fourth with 23 points and one first-place vote,
while Pace, Adelphi and Saint Michaels finished fifth, sixth and
seventh, respectively.
Last year’s Northeast-10 Women’s Diver of the Meet,
Bentley sophomore Nicola Mancini, set the
new Northeast-10 mark on the 1-meter board, posting a score of
453.60 in prelims before registering a score of 431.70 in the
finals. Her 424.40 score on the 3-meter last year was second
all-time in Northeast-10 championship history.
So. Connecticut junior Raymond Cswerko,
a University of Maryland transfer, set new Northeast-10 records in
the both the 200 IM (1:49.51) and 100 breaststroke (55.56) last
year, and was also part of the Owls’ record-setting 200
freestyle relay.
Teammate Louis Geist, now a sophomore,
set a new conference mark in the 500 freestyle (4:34.70) a year
ago.
This year marks a slightly new structure for the
conference’s annual championships, as it has expanded from a
three-day meet to a four-day event. Competition will begin
Thursday, Feb. 6 with the men’s 1-meter diving prelims at
2:00 p.m., followed by the women’s 1-meter prelims. Both
1-meter competition finals will be held later that night beginning
at approximately 6:50 p.m., followed by the women’s and
men’s 800-yard freestyle relays.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday will have its standard 10:00 a.m.
trials and 6:00 p.m. finals.
