Klaiber Highlights Three Major Award Winners for Saint Anselm


MANSFIELD, Mass. – New Haven junior Ava Fitzmaurice and Saint Anselm junior Bre Klaiber have been recognized as the Northeast-10 Softball Southwest and Northeast Division Players of the Year, as the league announced its complete list of major award winners and all-conference selections on Wednesday afternoon. 

Due to divisional scheduling this season in the COVID-19 pandemic, softball's major awards were broken up by division. All-Conference team selections remained the same, however, including NE10 players from both divisions on its three teams and All-Rookie Team. For a complete list of all-conference honorees, please see below. 

The Hawks had three major award winners and claimed the Northeast Division Title for the third straight season by going an NE10-best 21-3 this year. Overall Saint Anselm tied for the conference lead with six All-Conference selections, along with Adelphi. Franklin Pierce had four and these three teams claimed six of the eight major awards. The Panthers went 20-4 in the Southwest this year, while Franklin Pierce went 16-9, its best conference record in program history. 

Fitzmaurice secured Player of the Year honors for New Haven after a dominant year in the circle and at the plate for the Chargers. She ranked second in the NE10 during conference play with a .427 batting average while also posting a .488 on-base percentage and .720 slugging percentage with 11 extra base hits and 17 runs scored. Ftizmaurice was just as impressive as pitcher in leading the Chargers to wins in 19 of its last 20 games. She led the NE10 in innings (110.1), wins (15) and ranked fourth in ERA at 0.76 with 57 strikeouts. 

Klaiber was the only hitter with a better average than Fitzmaurice during conference play, batting .456 with a .549 on-base percentage while slugging .676. She finished with 31 hits, 18 runs, nine extra base hits and 19 RBI. Klaiber only struck out twice in 68 at bats while ranking second in the NE10 with 14 walks. 

Saint Anselm's Morgan Perry claimed Pitcher of the Year honors for the second straight year, this time in the Northeast Division. She tied for the NE10 lead in ERA in conference play at 0.40 and went a perfect 12-0 with ten complete games, two no-hitters and a perfect game. She also leads the nation with 13.6 strikeouts per seven innings and has 163 total. 

Ally Muller of Adelphi earned Southwest Division Pitcher of the Year honors. She also posted a 0.40 ERA in conference play this year while going 13-1 with 13 complete games. In 88 innings she allowed just 35 hits and walked ten while recording 119 strikeouts. She tossed three one-hitters throughout the season and gave up four or more hits just four times. 

Adelphi's Faith Camilleri was selected as the Southwest Division Defensive Player of the Year for her work at first base this year. In addition to hitting .315 she committed just one error in 171 total chances during conference play for a.994 fielding percentage. Kylie Fitzpatrick claimed the Northeast Division Defensive Player of the year honors after winning the award in 2019. The second baseman didn't commit an error on the year, converting all 62 of her chances in conference action. 

Franklin Pierce's Ashley Cangiano helped the Ravens to the best regular season in program history, thanks to her work at the plate and in the field. She hit .400 in conference play with 30 hits, 15 runs and 13 extra base hits, which was tied for third in the league. In the field she played four positions and didn't commit an error. Pace's Kaylani Miller was recognized as the Southwest Division Rookie of the Year. The third basemen hit an impressive .414 while slugging .757 in conference play. She scored 17 runs with five doubles, five triples and 22 RBI while stealing six bases.

Franklin Pierce's Andy Klaus was selected as the NE10 Coach of the Year after leading the Ravens to their best season in program history. The team had never posted a winning conference record previously and finished 18-6 this year. With Tuesday's win, Klaus became the first Franklin Pierce coach to lead the team to a 20-win season. The Ravens also rank second in the NE10 in batting average (.309) and lead the conference in slugging at .478.
