Franklin Pierce Men's Basketball Earns Spot in NCAA East Regional Championship

Franklin Pierce earns spot in East Regional title game

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Top-seeded Franklin Pierce University had four players in double figures to cruise past fourth-seeded University of New Haven, 80-63, Sunday night in a semifinal contest of the 2013 NCAA Division II Men's Basketball East Regional.

With the win, the Ravens advance to the regional championship game, where they will take on seventh-seeded Bridgeport at the SNHU Fieldhouse in Manchester, N.H. on Tuesday night (7:00 p.m.). 

Bridgeport earned its spot in the regional title contest with an exciting 58-56 victory over third-seeded Assumption College on Sunday evening.

Franklin Pierce (23-8) handled New Haven on Sunday night behind 19 points and 12 rebounds from Adrianos Vourliotakis. 2013 Northeast-10 Player of the Year Eric Jean-Guillaume had 17 points and four assists in the victory, while Ryen Vilmont added 13 points and seven boards.

New Haven (20-9) was led by Jeffery Adkins with 19 points, while Justin Exum had 13 points and eight rebounds for the Chargers.

Down one with 43 seconds to play, Bridgeport's Dion Waiters converted the game-winning layup to lift the Purple Knights to a 58-56 victory, earning them a spot in the NCAA East Regional title game on Tuesday night.

Waiters' bucket put Bridgeport (23-9) on top at 57-56 following a pair of free throws by Assumption's Tim Beinert, which had put the Greyhounds in front, 56-55, with under a minute to play.

Beinert had 18 points for the second straight day for Assumption (21-8), while Terrance Bobb-Jones had 17 points and nine boards in the losing effort. Ryan Rozsnaki added eight assists and seven boards for the Greyhounds.

The Northeast-10 is an association of 16 NCAA Division II colleges and universities located in New England and New York that are committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic opportunities for more than 6,000 student-athletes. Each year, 4,000 of those student-athletes compete in Conference championships in 23 sports, making the NE-10 the largest DII conference in the country.
