ALBANY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose stood out as three members of the men’s basketball program were honored by the Capital District Basketball Hall of Fame Sunday evening. Head men’s basketball coach Brian Beaury (pictured, left) and former team captain Todd Duval (’95) were inducted as part of the class of 2013. Assistant coach Mike Long (pictured, right), who was inducted in 2010, was the recipient of the Sam Perkins Sportsmanship Award.

“We are very honored to be recognizing three great basketball people, not only for what they have achieved on the court, but for being outstanding members of our community who are very generous with their time in community events." said Rene M. LeRoux, the founder and Executive Director of the Hall of Fame. "As this is our five year anniversary, we feel that this class is very special. Brian and Mike have had long records of success at Saint Rose. They have made it one of the top NCAA Division II programs in the country. Todd, nominated by Darren Donohue and former Shenendehowa High School great Jim Zullo, was a former Albany Times Union Player of the Year. Coach Zullo personally mentioned what a special player and person he is.”

Beaury, who just completed his 27th year on Western Avenue, is one of the most decorated and affluent college coaches in the game. He became just the 34th NCAA Division II head coach to reach the 500-win plateau in 2008-09 and is a member of two additional Halls of Fame. Saint Rose was furthermore listed as the 11th all-time winningest NCAA Division II program (by victories) at the start of the 2012-13 campaign.

Beaury, who owns a 561-261 career record at his alma mater, stands seventh on the career wins list among all-time NCAA II coaches, has led Saint Rose to 26 postseason appearances throughout his 27 years at the helm, including 12 NCAA Tournament berths in the last 22 years, three NCAA Tournament Elite Eight appearances and a national semifinal showing as well.

The 1996 Saint Rose Distinguished Alumni Award Winner, Beaury has furthermore co-chaired two capital campaigns at the College.

A former three-year team captain, Duval played four years at Saint Rose. He stands 10th among the College’s all-time leaders with 404 assists and is fifth in assists average with 4.0 per-game. Duval was part of four Golden Knights teams that averaged 22.3 victories, including the 1900-91 NAIA District 31 Championship team, the College’s first NCAA Tournament squad in 1991-92, and the 1994-95 NCAA Tournament team that furthermore won the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship.

He was an Albany Times Union and Channel 13 All-Star honoree and was named the Section II Player of the Year throughout his high school career at Shenendehowa.

One of Beaury’s current assistants, Long is among the most venerable mentors in area basketball circles. He has been a staple in the college coaching ranks for 40 years and is a member of three different Halls of Fame. The College’s first head men’s basketball coach, Long returned to the Golden Knights at the onset of the 2006-07 season to work with Beaury, his former player, after serving as the head coach himself from 1973-86.

Prior to entering the collegiate coaching ranks, Long was an assistant coach/player for the Ft. Sheridan Post team while fulfilling his military duties until 1971. Upon completion, he became the JV coach at his alma mater, Siena College, for a season.

He was instrumental in bringing men’s basketball to the athletics program at Saint Rose, as he took the reins for the Golden Knights inaugural varsity season in 1973. Long completed his 13 seasons with a 164-156 record, and was inducted into Saint Rose Athletics Hall of Fame in April, 1992. Long was subsequently inducted into the Bishop Maginn High School Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Capital District Basketball Hall of Fame three years ago.

After his initial tenure at Saint Rose, Long went to Sage College of Albany from 1990-03. Long boasted a 220-143 record throughout his 13-year stay there. He was named the Region III, Division 2 Coach of the Year by the National Junior College Athletic Association following the 2001-02 season when Sage finished 27-4.

Long received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Siena in 1968. While at Siena, he played three years of basketball for the varsity squad, and was named team captain his senior year.
