Upsets Highlight Quarterfinal Round of NE10 Men's Basketball Championship

SNHU, SCSU and Saint Anselm Score Upset Wins on Sunday.


MANSFIELD, Mass. - A wild quarterfinal round in the Northeast-10 Men's Basketball Championship took place on Sunday, as three of the top four seeds were upset with only top-seeded Saint Michael's surviving and advancing to the semifinals - which are scheduled for Wednesday night. 

No. 7 Saint Anselm scored the biggest upset of the day with an 80-71 victory over No. 2 Adelphi behind a 26-point performance from Sean McCarthy. No. 6 Southern Connecticut defeated No. 3 Bentley by an 88-78 margin, while No. 5 Southern New Hampshire knocked-off No. 4 Pace, 83-76. Saint Michael's, the NE10 regular season champion, held off No. 8 Assumption for a 70-67 win.

No. 1 Saint Michael's 70, No. 8 Assumption 67 - Box Score

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Top-seeded Saint Michael's held off a second half charge from No. 8-seeded Assumption in the quarterfinals of the NE10 Men's Basketball Championship on Sunday, as the Purple Knights advanced to Wednesday's semifinal round with a 70-67 win at the Ross Sports Center. 
 
CJ Crews scored 22 points on 7-of-16 shooting to lead Saint Michael's, while three of his teammates also added double-figure scoring in the victory. The Purple Knights shot just 38.1% from the field as a team, but a strong defensive effort held Assumption to 35.9% shooting. Kasy Draper scored a game-high 25 points for the Greyhounds. 
 
Saint Michael's advances to the semifinals of the NE10 Championship for the first time since 2015 and will host No. 5-seeded Southern New Hampshire. 

No. 7 Saint Anselm 80, No. 2 Adelphi 71 - Box Score

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Junior Sean McCarthy matched his season-high with 26 points, including 18 in the second half, and the seventh-seeded Saint Anselm men's basketball team defeated second-seeded Adelphi on the road in the Northeast-10 Championship quarterfinal round on Sunday. With the win, the Hawks have secured a spot in the conference tournament's semifinals for the fourth straight season. With a 19-point performance, Arbuckle climbed to eighth on the program's all-time scoring list and now has 1,798 points in his career.

McCarthy shot 13-for-16 from the field, while Zac Taylor netted 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting to help the Hawks to the upset win. Both players also grabbed seven rebounds and added one assist each. Adelphi's Dayshaun Walton scored a team-high 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting to lead the Panthers. 

Saint Anselm will travel to play Southern Connecticut in the NE10 Championship semifinal on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Tip-off will be live on NE10 NOW. 


No. 6 Southern Connecticut 88, No. 3 Bentley 78 - Box Score

WALTHAM, Mass. – No. 6 Seed Southern Connecticut upset No. 3 Bentley, 88-78, in the quarterfinal of the Northeast-10 Conference Men's Basketball Championship on the Falcons' home court. With the win, the Owls advance to the NE10 semifinals where they will host No. 7 Saint Anselm at James Moore Field House on Wednesday, Mar. 6 at 7 p.m.

The Owls' win marks its first trip to the NE10 semifinals since the 2018-19 season and the first time Southern defeated Bentley in the conference tournament. Marty Silvera led the Owls' offense with 19 points, nine assists and four steals while Josh McGettigan totaled 18 points. Cherif Diarra totaled 12 points and five blocks while Sean James and Mason Williams both added 11 points each. Kazell Stewart totaled nine points and nine rebounds with a pair of blocks.

Bentley's Zach Laput scored a game-high 28 points in the loss, to go along with eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. 


No. 5 SNHU 83, No. 4 Pace 76 - Box Score

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - Alex Rivera scored 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting, and 6-of-8 from three-point range, to lead No. 5-seeded Southern New Hampshire to an 83-76 victory over No. 4-seeded Pace on Sunday at the Goldstein Athletics Center, as the Penmen advance to Wednesday's semifinal round at top-seeded Saint Michael's. 

SNHU shot a scorching 57.7% (30-of-52) from the field as a team, including 69.6% (16-of-23) in the second half and 59.3% (16-of-27) overall from long range. SNHU had five players score in double-digits with Matt Becht adding 15 in the victory. The Penmen were able to hold off Pace and its leading scorer Bryan Powell - who netted a game-high 31 points on 11-of-22 shooting. 

The Penmen advance to the semifinal round for the second straight season and the fifth time in the last nine seasons.
