NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Top-seeded and No. 4 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University earned a 78-72 win over Northeast-10 Conference opponent and third-seeded Saint Anselm College on Tuesday night at the Moore Field House in the 2014 NCAA Division II Men's Basketball East Regional Championship game.
The Owls, now winners of 19 straight, improved to 30-2 overall on the season and will now move on to the Elite Eight in Evansville, Ind. with the victory. Their national quarterfinal opponent will be Central Missouri of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association at 1:00 p.m. (EST) on Wednesday, March 26.
So. Connecticut junior Tylon Smith, the 2014 Northeast-10 Championship Most Outstanding Player, was named the regional's Most Outstanding Player following the game and earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team after finishing with 29 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in Tuesday's title game. He averaged 25.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 6.3 assists in the Owls' three tournament games.
Langston and Michael Mallory added 15 points each, while Langston also grabbed seven rebounds.
After trailing 32-25 at the half, So. Connecticut turned it around in the second half to take control before sealing the win at the line. The Owls went on a 22-4 run midway through the second half to turn a eight-point deficit into a 10-point lead.
Saint Anselm had four players score in double figures, led by Chris Santo and Mabrey with 16 each.
