Saint Anselm, New Haven Picked Atop Northeast-10 Men’s Basketball Preseason Poll

top respective divisions in coaches' poll

SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – Saint Anselm College and the University of New Haven topped their respective divisions in the 2013-14 Northeast-10 Conference Men's Basketball Preseason Coaches' Poll, the conference office announced Monday morning.

Saint Anselm (23-6, 18-4 NE-10), ranked No. 16 in the country according to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) preseason poll, received 14 first-place votes and 105 points to secure the top spot in the Northeast-10 Northeast Division poll.

Saint Anselm is coming off a 2012-13 campaign in which it won the Northeast-10 regular-season title and hosted the NCAA East Regional. The Hawks will also be featured in a nationally televised game against crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday, February 8 at 11:30 a.m. on CBS Sports Network. New Haven (20-9, 16-6 NE-10), which is receiving votes in the NABC preseason poll, received 13 first-place votes and 90 points to finish first in the Northeast-10 Southwest Division poll. The Chargers were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Northeast-10 Championship but advanced to the semifinal round of the East Regional last winter.

So. New Hampshire (19-11, 12-10 NE-10) finished second in the Northeast Division poll, receiving 85 points to narrowly oust Franklin Pierce University (24-9, 16-6 NE-10), which collected 84 points and one first-place vote.

So. New Hampshire won the 2013 Northeast-10 Championship with a win on the road over Franklin Pierce, while Franklin Pierce went on to win the NCAA East Regional and advance to the Elite Eight in Louisville, Ky.

Rounding out the remainder of the Northeast Division poll was Bentley University (11-15, 9-13 NE-10) with 62 points, Saint Michael's College (8-18, 5-17 NE-10) with 37 points, Assumption College (21-8, 17-5 NE-10) with 35 points, and Merrimack College (12-15, 9-13 NE-10) and Stonehill College (11-15, 7-15 NE-10) with 34 points apiece.

In the Southwest Division poll, The College of Saint Rose (15-14, 10-12 NE-10) tied for second place behind New Haven with 70 points, just a year removed from its run to the Northeast-10 Championship Semifinal as the No. 10 seed.

Southern Connecticut State University (17-10, 14-8 NE-10) also received 70 points to tie for the second spot with Saint Rose, as the Owls also secured one first-place tally in the voting.

Making up the remainder of the Southwest Division poll was Le Moyne College (13-14, 10-12 NE-10) with 44 points, Adelphi University (14-15, 11-11 NE-10) with 39 points, American International College (9-17, 6-16 NE-10) with 33 points and Pace University (9-17, 6-16 NE-10) with 25 points. Adelphi also received one first-place vote.
