COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College men's basketball alumnus Tom Ward '12 signed with the Worthing Thunder of the professional English Basketball League (EBL) last week, making his debut with the squad by tallying 28 points and seven rebounds on Saturday.
"Saint Michael's basketball is very excited that Tom will be playing for the Worthing Thunder," said Purple Knight first-year head coach Josh Meyer, who enters his third season with the program, having coached Ward in 2011-12. "Tom has had many great accomplishments as a student-athlete and person. We are very proud of him as he embarks on this terrific opportunity to play professional basketball and represent his hometown. Tom is the type of player and person who will make any team that he is part of significantly better as a result of his basketball ability, intangibles and leadership. We look forward to following Tom and the Thunder."
Ward, who is tied for fifth in Saint Michael's history with a 40.2-percent career three-point percentage, knocking down 106 threes while appeared in 72 games for the Purple Knights during three years following his transfer from Division I Saint Francis (N.Y.) College. Ward made 19 starts as a senior captain in 2011-12.
In joining the Thunder, Ward plays for a squad in Division 1 of the EBL, the second tier of professional hoops in the United Kingdom behind the British Basketball League. His Worthing team also plays approximately 16 miles from his native Brighton. During a preseason friendly with the USA Select team on Saturday, Ward, a 6-foot-4 guard, put together his impressive stat line in a 101-97 overtime victory.
