SCSU Upsets Pace; Assumption Wins on Last Play to Advance to the NE10 Softball Championship Weekend

MANSFIELD, Mass. - No. 6 Assumption and No. 8 Southern Connecticut advanced to Championship weekend of the Northeast-10 Conference Softball Championship with first round victories on Tuesday. The Greyhounds and Owls will now travel to Garden City, where top-seeded Adelphi will serve as host of the three-day tournament - set to begin on Thursday. 

Assumption held off No. 7 Bentley on Tuesday on the final play of the game, while Southern Connecticut upset No. 5 Pace to join the top four seeds - Adelphi, Saint Anselm, Franklin Pierce and Southern New Hampshire - in the single-elimination tournament, as part of Championship weekend. Southern Connecticut will play No. 4 Southern New Hampshire and Assumption will open against No. 3 Franklin Pierce on Thursday.

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - The No. 8-seeded Southern Connecticut softball team defeated No. 5-seeded Pace, 5-2, in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament at the Pace Softball Field. With the win, the Owls moved to 18-20-1 overall, while the Setters fell to 27-18 overall.
Jessica Perucki threw a gem in the circle for Southern Connecticut with a complete game and 10 strikeouts.

Jacqueline Dumont was 3-for-3 on the day that included two runs batted in and one run scored. Madelyn Sauve went 1-for-2 including a walk with one run scored. Emily Lange snagged two walks at the plate and scored two runs for the Owls. Ally Petrella went 1-for-3 at the plate with one run scored.

The Owls will face No. 4-seeded Southern New Hampshire on Thursday, May 5th in Garden City, N.Y. on the campus of Adelphi University. A time is to be determined.


(6) Assumption 3, (7) Bentley 2 – Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore Abigail Larson hit a two-run double and also helped throw out the tying run at home to end the game in leading the Assumption softball team to a 3-2 victory over Bentley in the opening round of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament on Tuesday afternoon. With the victory, Assumption advanced to the six-team championship round at Adelphi.

Corin Mahan went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Greyhounds at the plate, while pitcher Erin Barry hurled a gem - allowing just two runs on four hits in a complete-game effort. Assumption (18-26) will next trek to Adelphi for the championship round where it will first face Franklin Pierce on Thursday at a time to be determined.

* Pace, Assumption & Bentley all finished with a 14-12 record. Within the mini-conference, Pace was 3-1, Assumption was 2-2 and Bentley was 1-3. Pace earns the #5 seed, Assumption earns the #6 seed and Bentley earns the #7 seed.
