Greyhounds Hold Off Adelphi 3-2 For First NE10 Title


WORCESTER, Mass. – Top seed Assumption took a 1-0 lead late in the first quarter and never trailed over the final three quarters as the program captured its first-ever NE10 Championship and ran its win streak to a school-record 20 games. 

The Greyhounds were led by the Championship's Most Outstanding Player, Kylie Gargiulo, who made four saves in the final period to hold off a tough Adelphi squad. Assumption finished with a slight 15-14 edge in shots and 10-9 advantage in corners. Gargiulo finished with ten saves in teh contest while Amanda Montiel finished with seven stops for Adelphi in the loss.

Assumption grabbed a 1-0 lead in the final minute of the first quarter from a goal by Jenna Graf on a penalty corner. The Greyhounds added to their lead 1:29 into the second on a Mia Salah shot. Adelphi responded just over a minute later with a goal of its own to pull within one, 2-1. 

In the second half, Salah netted her second goal at 36:48 off a Deirdre Burchill feed for the 3-1 advantage. Jackie Brown pulled the Panthers within one with just seven minutes remaining and they continued to pepper the net over the final three minutes but couldn't break down the Assumption defense. 

Assumption, currently ranked third in the nation, will find out the location of its first round NCAA Tournament game when the field is announced on Monday at 3 p.m. on NCAA.com. 

In addition to Kylie Gargiulo, Graf and Salah were named to the All-Tournament team for Assumption. Alexandra Docyk and Danielle Kempf were selected from Adelphi.

The Panthers' Giana McKeough was honored as the winner of the Elite 24 award, as the junior marketing major owns a perfect 4.0 GPA.
