CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL

First Pitch on Saturday is at 12 p.m.

MANSFIELD, Mass. - Southern New Hampshire and Assumption will play on Saturday for the Northeast-10 Conference Baseball Championship, as both teams defeated the Southwest Division's top seed Adelphi on Friday to advance to the final day of Championship Weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Rocheleau Field, with the "if-necessary" second game played 35 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.

The Penmen (40-8), the top seed in the Northeast Division, enter Saturday with an unblemished 2-0 record, while the Greyhounds (23-22), the third seed in the Northeast Division, have one loss in the Championship - which is played in a double-elimination format. In five meetings during the regular season, SNHU was 5-0 against Assumption, including a four-game sweep on May 6-7.

All games during Championship Weekend will be streamed live on NE10NOW.tv

(1) Southern New Hampshire 5, (1) Adelphi 4 – Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior Sam Henrie singled to drive in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning as #8 SNHU beat Adelphi 5-4 Friday in Worcester.  The Penmen need one more win on Saturday to claim the Northeast-10 title. Redshirt sophomore Cristian Mercedes went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBI for the Penmen.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Penmen would take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.  Rivera laced a two-out single, and scored on a double by Mercedes.
  • Adelphi tied the game in the fifth, and moved in front 4-1 in the top of the sixth inning, taking advance of three SNHU errors in frame.
  • After redshirt sophomore Nick Schwartz reached on an error in the sixth, redshirt sophomore Cam Caraher walked.  Alex Kennedy followed with a double to the gap in left center field to make it 4-3.
  • The Penmen tied the game in the seventh.  Graduate student Idelson Taveras singled and stole second, scoring on a triple by Mercedes.
  • In the ninth, Rivera reached on a two-out single.  He stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error.  Mercedes followed with a hit-by-pitch, and Henrie then singled to left for the win.

(3) Assumption 10, (1) Adelphi 9 - Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. - Emilio Acosta went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, helping Assumption fend-off a late rally by Adelphi - the Southwest Division's regular season champion - and hold on for a 10-9 victory. In the process, the Greyhounds eliminated the Panthers and advanced to Saturday to play for the NE10 Baseball Championship.

Assumption's Owen Podolec add three hits with an RBI and two runs scored - one of four Greyhounds with multiple hits on the day. Adelphi was led by Anthony Cipri, who finished with two hits, three RBI and two runs scored on his way to earning a place on the All-Championship Team.

With the game tied 7-7 in the top of the eighth, Podolec tallied an RBI single to give Assumption the lead, and was followed by Jared Berardino blasting a two-run homer to extend the lead to 10-7. Cipri hit a two-run shot of his own in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 10-9, but Assumption's Alexander Meesig closed out the game with a five-out save.

Assumption, the third seed out of the Northeast Division, will need to beat Southern New Hampshire twice on Saturday in order to win its first NE10 title since 1987. The last time the Greyhounds earned a finalist finish in the NE10 Baseball Championship was in 2009.
