Southern Connecticut State Captures Both Men's and Women's Indoor Track Championships

BOSTON, Mass. -- Sports may be the world's greatest unscripted drama, but for the seventh straight season, the story still finished the same: Southern Connecticut State being crowned the men's NE10 Indoor Track and Field Champion.  The Owls cruised, nearly doubling second place New Haven, 238-152.5.  The point total is the most for the Owls since 2020.

SCSU captured half of the meet's 18 scored events, headlined by a three-peat performace from Cameron Belton in the shotput.  Belton took the title by nearly two meters over the rest of the field, a gap that encompased the next four competitors from second to fifth.  The Owls also swept the 4x400, 4x800 and DMR relays and saw Dylan Torok win both the high jump and heptathlon to earn Most Outstanding Field Athlete. Jonathan Volpe and Adelino Daveiga also took home gold, winning the 800m and mile run and the weight throw respectively.

Torok continues a heptahlon legacy for SCSU.  The junior picked up right where Shane Smith left off for the Owls, winning the indoor heptathlon in each of the last two seasons.

Like Belton, Volpe's 800m win was also a repeat performance.  The runner-up to the NE10 cross-country title this fall, Volpe avenged his runner-up finish in last winter's indoor mile with his win on Saturday.

Franklin Pierce boasted two of the top individual performers at the TRACK at new balance.  2023 NE10 cross country champ Wondu Summa took hom Most Outstanding Track Athlete honors while splitting Meet MVP with teammate Stephen Harris.  Summa coasted to wins in the 3k and 5k while Harris won the 60m dash, 200m dash and high jump.  In maybe the most dramatic sequence of the competition, Harris cleared 1.98m on the high jump before sprinting 200m in an NCAA DII-best 20.0 seconds even.  The mark also broke the NE10 Championship record Harris set on Friday in the prelims.  Immediately after winning the 200, Harris changed his cleats and returned to the high jump where he passed on 2.03m.  SCSU's Kenneth Okoye then missed on 2.03, ceding first place to Harris after having gone 0-3 at 1.98.

The one event most singularly dominated by one school, however, belonged to runner up New Haven.  The Chargers scored 35 of an available 39 points on the triple jump.  Matthew Steele won, followed by Jackson Marescot, Kenneth Holland, Jacky Marescot and Jordany Dely in second, third, fourth and fifth.  Luis Calderon also scored, finishing in seventh.
