USTFCCCA Announces All-Region Awards

USTFCCCA Regional Award Winners | USTFCCCA All-Region Honorees 

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) recently announced its major awards for each of its eight regions and the NE10 was well represented among its recipients, capturing seven of eight possible regional honors. 

AIC led all schools with a pair of honorees, while Southern Connecticut swept all the men's coaching awards. Franklin Pierce added one student-athlete honoree and one assistant coach honoree. Read about all the winners below. 

The USTFCCCA also released its All-Region honors which honors those who were ranked in the top-five regionally in an individual event or top three in a relay. The NE10 had 181 honorees, with 91 on the men's side and 90 on the women's side. The Southern Connecticut men led all programs with 40 all-region honors while the Adelphi led all women's programs with 15 selections and were one of five schools with at least ten honorees. Men's Track Athlete of the Year: Ezra Mutai – AIC
Mutai, a freshman from Eldoret, Kenya, is ranked first nationally in the 10,000 at 28:44.21, a mark that he used to not only win the Northeast-10 title, but set a conference record. He is the only male athlete in the East Region that  auto/provisionally qualified in three individual events (1500, 5K, 10K). 

Women's Track Athlete of the Year: Roxan Foster – AIC
Foster, a freshman from Jamaica, is ranked 11th nationally in the 100H at 13.88. She scored 16½ points at the NE10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships by winning the 100H, toting the baton first on the winning 4×100 relay and finishing third in the 200.  

Men's Field Athlete of the Year: Evangelos Fradelakis – Adelphi
Fradelakis, a senior from Mount Sinai, New York, is ranked 10th nationally in the hammer at 64.02m (210-1). He was named the NE10 Field Athlete of the Championships after winning the hammer and placing runner-up in the discus, an event in which he sits third in the region. 

Women's Field Athlete of the Year: Julieth Nwosu – Franklin Pierce
Nwosu, a freshman from Brockton, Massachusetts, is ranked first regionally in the shot put at 14.09m (46-2¾) and third regionally in the discus at 40.10m (131-7). She is undefeated in the shot put in seven regular season meets, including a victory at the Northeast-10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships. 

Men's Coach of the Year: John Wallin – Southern Connecticut
Wallin, in his 11th year at Southern Connecticut, led the Fighting Owls to the team title at the Northeast-10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships with 301.5 points and setting a meet record for points scored. The Fighting Owls have seven top-20 national event rankings and three top-10 national #EventSquad Rankings. Southern Connecticut will be represented by seven athletes at the NCAA Championships. 

Men's Assistant Coach of the Year: Georgette Nixon – Southern Connecticut
Nixon, in her fourth year coaching the sprints, hurdles and relays at Southern Connecticut, coached athletes to contribute 89 of the Fighting Owls' winning total of 301.5 at the Northeast-10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Her athletes are ranked No. 1 in the East Region in four individual events and two relays. 

Women's Assistant Coach of the Year: Whitney Cyr – Franklin Pierce
Cyr, in her eighth year at Franklin Pierce, guided athletes to score in all four throwing events at the Northeast-10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The Ravens' throwers were topped by a pair of champions in the shot put and discus, sisters Julieth and Nkechinyere Nwosu. Julieth led five Ravens in the top 8, and she leads the East Region by over 4 feet.

ABOUT THE NE10
The NE10 is an association of 14 diverse institutions serving student-athletes across 24 NCAA Division II sports. Together we build brilliant futures by embracing the journey of every student-athlete.

Each year, 4,500 of those student-athletes compete in conference championships in 24 sports, making the NE10 the largest DII conference in the country in terms of sport sponsorship. Leading the way in the classroom, on the field and within the community, the NE10 is proud of its comprehensive program and the experience it provides student-athletes.
