For more than a quarter of a century, Gordon McCullough's name was synonymous with University of Hartford Athletics and the pride and competitiveness which marked his career became the hallmark of the Hawks program.

In fact, 27 years-one half of his life-had been dedicated to Hartford athletics when he passed away in 1989.

McCullough enjoyed the rare distinction of being named regional Coach-of-the-Year in two sports - for basketball in 1974 and golf in 1988.

McCullough's tenure as the school's director of athletics, a post he held from 1974 to 1986, was keynoted by on-going progress. After helping the NE-7 and then NE-8 establish itself as a rising power in Division II, he helped elevate Hartford to Division II in 1984.

It was the sport of golf that was McCullough's greatest love. He began coaching the golf team in 1963 and did so until his death. Further, his influence was felt across conference lines as both the North Atlantic Conference and Northeast-10 championship trophies are named in his honor.

Inducted posthumously into the University of Hartford Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame's inaugural class in 1991.
