SCSU Survives Penalty Shootout; Advances to Play Saint Rose for NE10 Women's Soccer Title

Rematch of 2019 Championship Game is Set for Sunday.


MANSFIELD, Mass. - No. 2-seeded Saint Rose rolled to a 5-0 win on Thursday, while No. 8-seeded Southern Connecticut outlasted No. 4-seeded Assumption in a penalty shootout to advance to Sunday's Northeast-10 Conference Women's Soccer Championship final. When the Golden Knights and Owls meet at the Plumeri Sports Complex, it will be a rematch of the 2019 NE10 Women's Soccer Championship. 

Five different players scored goals for Saint Rose in its win over No. 6-seeded Saint Anselm, as the Golden Knights advance to their 10th NE10 final in program history (8-1 in nine previous championship games). Southern Connecticut relied on the trio of Kelsey BurrNadine Hilkert and Georgia Teixeira to lead it past Assumption in penalty kicks after playing to a 0-0 draw through 110 minutes of action. 

Sunday's NE10 Championship final will begin at 1 p.m. at the Plumeri Sports Complex in Albany, N.Y., with Saint Rose serving as host.

ALBANY, N.Y. - Saint Rose punched its ticket to Sunday's Northeast-10 Conference Championship final with today's dominating 5-0 victory against Saint Anselm at Sullivan Field within the Plumeri Sports Complex.
 
The Golden Knights (13-1-3), ranked #8 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Weekly National Poll, had five different players account for its five goals and generated a 19-4 shot advantage to move within a step of a league record ninth NE10 postseason title.
 
Saint Rose, the second seed, will now host either eighth seed Southern Connecticut State on Sunday at 1:00 pm. The Owls advanced penalty kicks following 110 minutes of scoreless soccer at Assumption tonight.

"The girls played a superb match this afternoon. We displayed a great balance between possession and attacking directly. Getting the early goal set the tone and our girls executed the game plan incredibly well. Our defense had another strong performance. We are looking forward to Sunday," said head coach Laurie Darling Gutheil.

WALTHAM, Mass. ­– The No. 8–seeded Southern Connecticut women's soccer team defeated No. 4 Assumption in penalty kicks at Brian Kelly '83 Stadium to advance to the Northeast 10 Conference Championship final on Sunday. The Owls' record is now 7-7-4 overall, while the Greyhounds are 7-4-8 overall. 

How It Happened

  • The first 45 saw both teams trade chances at both ends of the field, but the game was scoreless at the half. 
  • After another scoreless half, the Owls and Greyhounds headed to two overtime periods before heading into penalty kicks. 
  • The Owls' Allie Smith and the Greyhounds Julia Walsh were solid for both teams in goal through 110 minutes of action. 
  • Assumption found themselves in familiar territory as they advanced to the semifinals on penalty kicks against Franklin Pierce. 

Round 1: The first round of shots saw Kelsey Burr loft the ball cleanly to the right side. Assumption's Julia Sferlazza took her turned but Allie Smith stopped her shot. 
Round 2: Victoria Vera skied one too far, while the Greyhounds Haileigh Ward got one past Smith.
Round 3: Nadine Hilkert went top left corner as Walsh was leaping right for the Owls second goal. Assumption's Ashley Wentzell missed on her opportunity. 
Round 4: The Owls' Taylor Davis and Greyhounds Lila Kalooski couldn't convert in the fourth round. 
Round 5: Georgia Teixeira stepped up with the game on the line and buried it to the left side to send the Owls to their second straight championship appearance.
