Under the direction of Northeast-10 Hall of Fame coach Archie Boulet, the Bryant University men’s golf program reigned as one region’s best teams and one of the best nationally for nearly 50 years. The program claimed 20 NE10 titles, including 16 in 18 years through the 1980’s and 1990’s. Bryant also made 31 NCAA Championship appearances and won 11 New England Titles from 1981-2007.

There might not have been a better stretch, however, than from 1988-1991. The four-year run completed a stretch of nine consecutive NE10 Championships for the then-Indians. Bryant advanced to the NCAA Championships each of the four years, finishing seventh in both 1988 and 1991. Those two finishes are the highest in program history and the highest for any NE10 golf program.

The 1988 team will go down as one of the greatest in program history, featuring three All-Americans in Chris McCarthy, Dave French and Bob Brown. The team won the NE10 Championship by 11 strokes over Bentley before heading the NCAA Championships where they took seventh. Brown led the field at the NCAA Championships for three rounds that spring before ultimately finishing eighth to earn All-America honors. The team shot an impressive 1,235, just one shot out of sixth and three shots out of a top-five finish.

Bryant followed that up with a 13th place finish in 1989, 9th in 1990 and then tying for seventh and finishing just three shots out of fifth in 1991. The stretch also included a trio of NE-10 Players of the Year in French (’88), Scott Trethaway (’90) and Paul Grondahl (’91). French was eventually inducted into the NE10 Hall of Fame in 2007, after earning All-America honors and claiming NE10 Player of the Year honors three times in his career.
