Owls Claim Fifth Straight NE10 Title With 225 Points


BOSTON, Mass. – Southern Connecticut won its fifth consecutive Northeast-10 Indoor Championship and 16th championship overall on Friday, Feb. 25 at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.

SCSU scored 225 points, the fourth most in NE10 Championship history, and placed first in five events. American International placed second overall with 194 points while New Haven was third, its highest finish ever, with 87 points. Franklin Pierce (72) and Stonehill (52) rounded out the top five. 

Following the competition, AIC's Yvan Lopes Ribeiro was honored as the Most Outstanding Field Performer of the Meet after winning the triple jump, long jump and the 60 meter hurdles. He set a pair of NE10 records in the long jump and hurdles on Thursday. He was also honored as the Most Valuable Athlete of the Meet for totaling the most points of any athlete in track and field events combined. Teammate Ezra Mutai was honored as the Outstanding Track Performer of the Meet after winning the 3000 meters in an NE10 record 8:15.39 and claiming first in the 5000 meters.   

Despite not winning the major awards, SCSU claimed five victories which was highlighted by a 1-4 showing in the shot put. Cameron Belton set a new NE10 record with a throw of 17.68 meters, while teammates Bernardo Mbaya, Jacob Meadows and Natanel Barbosa Torres finished in the next three spots.

Nigel Green (200m), Nate Llanos (pole vault) and Shane Smith (heptathlon) all earned individual victories for the Owls, while the quartet of Terrell Patterson, Shea Kenney, Jonathan Volpe, and Marquis Whyte won the 4x800-Meter Relay with a time of 7:48.85.

Franklin Pierce's Everidge was honored as the winner of the NE10 Elite 24 Award for owning the highest GPA of any qualified athlete at the championship. The elementary education major owns a 3.984 GPA.
